One of the coolest and most thematic abilities ever introduced in WoW was the Death Knight original “Raise Ally” ability that brought the dead ally back as a ghoul.
I believe it was originally because players weren’t smart enough to push the 1-4 buttons to operate the ghoul. And no, sadly, Im not being sarcastic either.
Basically, it functioned like how you would imagine. When the ally was “battle rezzed” you would became a ghoul for 5 up to minutes. The ghoul operated identical to operating a vehicle in combat. There were a few different attacks(Claw, etc) and a button to explode the ghoul(ending the reanimation).
The following also apply:
- Can’t be used in Arenas.
- The ghoul raised from an ally has set stats, attack speed, etc.
*The ghoul counts as a vehicle
- when people die and get raised as ghoul, they still have the “You are dead” dialog box in the middle of the screen
- You gain standard Ghoul abilities, exactly the same as an Unholy DK’s pet Ghoul. Additionally, you gain an extra ability that allows you to detonate your Ghoul.
- When raised as a ghoul you are STILL able to get resurrected by other players (while being a ghoul). The same applies after the ghoul expires in 5 minutes.
- the dead player body remains where he died, targetable, and able to be resurrected.
Perhaps, upon being raised as a ghoul the player could vet a brief explanation to operate the ghoul. I mean, you move as normal and push buttons 1-4 to attack. It wasn’t really that confusing.
I just wanted to mention this in hopes that the developers would consider brining this ability back.

It was awesome. I miss those really flavor spells. They purged those and gave all kinds of weird filler rotation spells

Raise Ally still exists— but in a better form now, because it’s a battle rez.

Those ghouls were op as hell in arena. They would claw you to death lol. (yes I know you stated they wouldn’t be used in arena, just reminiscing about s5 of arena).

There’s actually a trinket on KT that does that now. Except the ghoul has no buttons and can just autoattack. Sadly it’s an INT caster trinket, but I sometimes go in hopes of seeing it drop and maybe convincing someone to trade it so I can raise allies in timewalks.
Such fun memories of the original spell. One time I casted it right as I died, and it raised me as the ghoul.

It’s not as fun though. I don’t think that’s better.

It will be back in WotLK at least
I think one of the big things is the ghoul was incredibly weak, and if I recall correctly the debuff it gave the player meant they were unable to be combat rezzed normally after being brought back as a ghoul (been a long time so I could be misremembering).
Instead we just have base battle rez instead which whilst more useable isn’t quite as interesting flavour wise.
Haha, thanks, I remember this in WotLK arena.
Good times indeed.
It profoundly confused some players.
Also was it Unholy that would respawn as a ghoul for a few seconds after you were killed? I recall snagging some kills on low HP players standing next to me as I blew myself up again.

The way I mentioned to bring it back would solve problems because you can still be rezzed back into your body either during or after ghoul. If there’s some reason Battle Rez couldn’t work while as a ghoul there is a button to explode the ghoul and just go back to being dead.
And yeah, the ghoul should be powerful enough to approximately equal a pkayers power level as it is replacing the standard battle rez ability we currently have.
But yeah it was just fun, interesting and very flavorful.
I agree we should have old rezz back. Also when we are at it bring back shadow of death as well.

I liked unholy being able to revive itself as a ghoul, almost like the Black Knight had to be killed more than once.
It was buggy as I recall but very thematic.

It was so cool and I miss that ability a lot.
PvP ruins every thing.
Would be cool if brought vack as a PvE only ability.

let unholy get it back but leave it like it is to the blood and frost
if a healer gets kia i would like a way to bring them back
Im really surprised that one Death Knight that trolls the dk forums 24/7/365 hasn’t derailed this thread with petty fighting with everyone…
*Knocks on wood.
