Brewmaster Help!

I’ve mostly been a DPS dude with some light healing sprinkled in here and there, but never really gotten to the point where I’ve been able to push higher end content in any patch. In 9.0x, it seems I’ve had the time to get to know dungeons and the raid better than previous expansions/patches.

I’ve been playing all the tanks lately, just trying each out at max level to see how they fare in dungeons play-style wise. I’ve been trying to find resources on each one to get better and better, making sure I’m optimizing my routes (never tanked above a +10, but still practicing anyways), and focusing on using all of my toolkit for each respective tank.

Monk has been my favourite since 8.3 (came back to the game after a decade off) but I’m having a really hard time cracking the Brewmaster. I’ve watched tons of videos, mostly Quazii, especially when he coaches, to figure out damage mitigation and cooldown usage, but I feel like I’ve hit sort of a brick wall.

I tanked a +8 Sanguine Depths on this dude a couple of days ago, and while it went well enough and we 1-chested it (missed 2 chest by about 30 seconds), I died a couple times, once to the pack before the gauntlet, and once during the gauntlet. The bosses were easy enough for a tyrannical week, but I’m really struggling on trash in general. In contrast, I did a +9 ToP as WW and the tank was a 197 ilvl Brewmaster and made it look so stupid easy.

Again, I know it’s really hard to contextualize this without any sort of video, but are there any silly mistakes you guys made when you were starting to push into higher keys? I’m thinking I’m missing some important part of the equation since I feel like I’m made of paper. I really want to make it work as a Brewmaster, but trash pulls just got me down in the dumps!

Thanks!

Do you know the name of that other brew? Maybe you can go look at the trinkets they’re wearing because they most likely have a bloodspattered scale.

Scale is an amazing trinket because it really fits within our rotation like a final missing piece. I have the Sire trink which is off cd more frequently, but less bubble.

Your trinkets right now are “better than nothing” but not ideal. Quantum is decent, but it has a long cd, so you’re often sitting on it, waiting for the right moment and not using it enough.

The other thing about quantum with your current setup is that your highest stats are crit and mastery. Your quantum device when activated is most likely just giving you a bunch more crit which has diminishing above 30%. Mastery is ok. When you activate it, just mouseover and check which stat it’s choosing, I could be wrong, it’s a funky little box.

The armor kit is ok but undertuned. You’d likely be better off with a straight offensive trinket. I know the bonus armor sounds cool, but you can’t have 100% uptime, and the spikes only work when getting hit, which brew generally tries to avoid.

The only other thing is, 13% vers is gonna hurt. Trust me, I know. For many months due to terrible great vault rewards I was running around 10% and 18% haste. It was an absolute meme. Now that I even have 20% vers, it’s an absolute gamechanger. You really do feel it.

In terms of rotation and routing, I guess I’d just need more info to be more help.

My advice for the 2 SD packs before the gauntlet: you can use zirali as a free power word barrier whenever you want since you are not saving it for kaal. You get all the benefits.

If you dont have enough room, take those two packs out. The need for more space is really gonna depend on affixes but sanguine and necrotic need more wiggle room.

My own advice: don’t hang on every word of streamers. Find your own style and what’s comfortable for you. They’re a great starting ground, but not bound by law.

EDIT: Had one last thought. If you’re struggling with trash specifically, but not bosses, watch to see if you’re allowing mobs to get behind you. They’re gonna hit you a lot harder with no dodge. It’s important to be careful when mobs are kinda perpendicular to your side, as if you turn your character a bit, now they’re behind you. I find a little bit of backpedaling helpful to keep mobs in a nice cone in front of me.

Thank you so much! I’m sorry I asked such a vague question, but at least maybe I can address my gear a little bit now!

I definitely feel you on the armor kit being undertuned, it doesn’t feel like much of an impact. And also, I double-checked and you’re correct about IQD, it’s giving me crit, haha. Not the most useful in most scenarios I reckon.

And TIL about using Zirali for anything other than gloom squall, thanks for that too! I’ll try and target a little more versatility, since I do feel ultra squishy at the moment.

Thanks again!

Ah, no probolo, my dude!
Roll fast, dunk hard.

My advice for right now is run some dungeons that drop decent trinkets. Sd and plaguefall have good tank trinkets as well as DoS for the scale. If you get a good one, you can always pump some valor into it.

if you plan on going main tank i suggest going Necrolord. Have extra shields to smooth out damage helps out a lot. However kyrian is good, I just dont stack mastery. My tank stats are vers/crit.

Try and push higher. you will be surprised what BM monks can do.
