I’d rather have simple mechanics that can’t be ignored than complicated mechanics that can.
IMHO, the BRD raid failed because people just wanted the nostalgia hit - they did not want the raid re-engineered. I mean, the re-released Molten Core was … interesting … but that was largely because players forgot that MC was designed for on-demand cleansing, and at by the time the re-release went live, cleanses were on an 8 second cooldown. And there were just not enough healers to keep everyone perpetually cleansed. So the community lost their tiny minds over that. But otherwise, it was an adequate balance between giving folks something to engage in and ease, which is what many players were satisfied with.
BRD’s re-engineering was overkill and didn’t even honor the mechanics of the time. It was also dreadfully overtuned. All it did was remind everyone how horrible static-seat raids are as we drudged through the content. I was originally expecting BRD to be our weekend content the entire anniversary, but the minute the last member got their completion, not one person asked to continue to do the raid (and my guild will do a lot of content on the weekend just for funsies – we have a dedicated day for it: Sunday Fun Run). Blizzard’s design of BRD bludgeoned the fun right out of a raid that should have been a night of nostalgia as our old school raiders regaled us with tales of ye olden days. Personally, I LIVE for those stories, as I, myself, started playing WoW towards the end of Vanilla, so missed those heady days).
Look, I get that Classic players are bored and Blizzard wants to keep things interesting - but when it comes to Retail and holiday events - just … calm down. Not everything needs to be a finger-bleeding grind. Just up the tenacity of the mobs so the mobs aren’t one-shot, put cosmetics on as rewards and call it a day. Folks have Heroic and Mythic content, or high level delves (which seem to be all the rage) or M+ dungeons to scratch that “challenge” itch.
I kept getting slung into BRD that had no one in it. I gave up trying.
I wanted to try it, but the heroic version was much harder than it should have been. I couldn’t get into a group because I didn’t have mythic raid gear. I gave up trying.
What is amusing is they just straight up abandoned it a month in and NEVER brought it up again, even now they refuse to even mention its existence or how poorly it was maintained.
Makes me wonder if they will have this type of mindset if they release another bad system.
I liked it but it was a pain to do. Only did one hall. Id love to see it come back for Cmassic TW week.
Did it once. Had some fun fights but they really gave us no reason to spend our time there when there was so much other stuff to do.
Imma be honest, I really…REALLY wanted to come in here and disagree with you.
But you make some good points, and I feel like the only reason I’m defensive is the nostalgia it gave me. I never played Vanilla, but when I started in Cata (before leaving for some years) BRD was one of the first places my friend and GM took me to show me how cool the game was. And that dungeon, while confusing and taking a long time, established my love for this game.
But, I am forced to realized that the nostalgia wore off for me quick because so many groups failed with seemingly well geared players. I think I only interacted with it for the first three weeks then completely ignored it. Not even LFR for weekly.
