Brann is Bad! (but he can be better!)

Delves are a great idea that are being soured in part by Brann Bronzebeard. In short, Brann is annoying at best and intrusive at worst, but he can be tweaked to be less so on both fronts. Here are a few of my complaints and suggestions to improve:

For starters, do we need Brann?

Yes and no. Brann, especially with his upcoming tank role, can be a valuable or even necessary addition for some players. However, some might wish he hung back in Dornogal. The solution here is to make Brann optional, with a toggle at the beginning on the delve at his loadout crate.

Brann should be seen, not heard.

This is a small complaint, but Brann is too chatty. Text chat is fine, but his incessant dialogue is obnoxious and the humor of it wears off quickly, if it ever existed. Just reduce his voice lines.

Brann is seen too much.

Brann’s ability effects are extremely invasive and occupy too much of the game screen. Oftentimes, I can’t see a mechanic clearly because there is too much clutter from Brann. The most offensive of these abilities are: the tantrum monkey who spits out bananas, the extremely large AOE of arrows, the titan orb, and the massive dinosaur. Brann is not the star of the show, so stop having his abilities overpower everything on screen.

All of these should be reduced to avoid cluttering the screen and distracting players. Use a trash raptor from BFA instead of the massive devilsaur. Reduce the titan orb size by 75%. Eliminate the monkey all together, or significantly reduce its visuals/animations. Increase the opacity of the AOE of arrows and reduce the density of arrows depicted.

Brann is too autonomous.

Brann is out of control. For starters, he needs to go through the Exile’s Reach tutorial and learn to STAND AND FIGHT, never run away. Whenever he gets aggro, he backs away like a bad DPS and forces you to chase mobs, often into other packs. No.

In addition, Brann needs controls like those given to pets or at least adjacent to those given for follower dungeon NPCs. Defend, Passive, Assist should be the minimum toggles. Brann should not attack anything you are not engaged with. He should never seek out a fight, only assist you. I personally believe all his individual abilities should also be on a toggle like pets, so you can customize how involved his support is. You only want him to auto attack, rapid fire, and drop healing potions? Done. This would also provide a sort of difficulty slider to delves that stretched beyond the tier system, allowing players to more incrementally adjust their challenge.

With these changes, I think the meme-ification of Brann (and the Bronzebeard family at large) would decline and the delve experience be framed as more serious content. As it stands, Brann is an unfunny joke that injects an unwanted flavor into a new content type that has serious potential. I am all for having fun, but Brann is not fun, he’s a cringe liability and an annoying distraction.

The idea of Brann, having a follower help out and pick up some of the roles we can’t do on all classes was a good idea.

But it feels like so much of TWW. Rushed, unpolished, and not well thought out in final implementation.

No Tank spec, originally was a big miss, especially given his DPS doesn’t make up enough for Healer classes to heal.

Not enough or really poorly timed healing when he’s set to heal. Going through a big fight with an unavoidable AOE on a class without any self heals only to get zero healing from Brann while that massive damage comes out is not good. Anyt real healer will know to heal the big damage. Brann Cannot.

He gets in the way of clicking and targetting

His abilities like the big egg that spawns the dino is intrusive, blocks targeting, and takes DPS away from actual targets. The egg needs to be scrapped and the dino should be permanently on. It doesn’t taunt. Doesn’t tank, and doesn’t do a lot of DPS. So why is it considered and treated like a “special ability” with some really asanine mechanic to spawn.

Overall. Delve’s and Brann are a great idea. Love em.

In practice: There’s clearlyt a lack of polish, bug fixing and balance behind him and the delves and too much of Brann’s abilities, and Delve mechanics feel rushed, half thought out, or just lazy “bullet sponges” that Brann doesn’t really help with.

Brann’s yelling reminds me not to stand in stuff. So I like it.

Maybe a toggle for those that don’t like it. Kind of like how we have one for Alakazam or whatever his name is in Dalaran.

Let us have other followers! Alleria wants to do delves

While he has a handful of annoying traits, if they were to fix just one thing with Brann, I’d pick his tendency to ride your a** and get in the way of clicking on anything. His voice and all that I just tune out. You can turn dialogue volume down.

I want to go full Xal’atah and make him WORSE.

He’s proven useful to me, but he definitely needs work. I’ll take minimal damage and he’ll fling healing potions like crazy, but when I get nailed by a solid hit or high damage aoe he won’t toss anything. There’s been times where I’ll try to simply skirt around something and he shoots it. The devilsaur and monkey are terribly distracting visually as well. Last night I was running with my wife in a delve and between her 2 hunter pets, the monkey, and the devilsaur I was mentally screaming inside while trying to tank. However, his emergency “oh sh*t” heal he uses on you can be a real life saver not to mention his dispelling and other aid he tosses your way. His AI just needs a bit of tweaking.

He loves to stare into walls sometimes but I’ve played Delves on many classes and specs, with Brann as DPS and Heals and I just don’t have issues.

“Don’t stand there!” get’s my attention.

But “Don’t go dying on me.” when he’s healer is kinda funny.

Brann’s been tolerable, but now that we’ve learned we’re stuck with him again through Season 2, everything he does annoys me now. He’s running all over the place, he won’t shut the hell up, he’s unreliable on interrupts / dispels, and undoubtedly when we get Tank Brann his threat / defense / self-heals will be sub-par.

He’s so bad and singularity opened up underneath him this last delve.
