Brand New WoW classic player here with some Dungeon-related questions

I am playing an Orc Shaman.

I did Ragefire Chasm dungeon easily on my first attempt.

I am trying to do Wailing Caverns and have failed twice.

  • What role should I queue for, as a leveling Shaman? I’ve been doing healing and my next questions assume that I’m a healer, but if I should be tanking or DPS please tell me
  • Should I be attacking mobs after a fight starts? Or standing back away from them?
  • I’m level 20 with earth and fire totems. What earth and fire totems should I use as a shaman healer in leveling dungeons?
  • Should I be using any damage spells (Lightning Shield/Earth Shock/Flame Shock/Lightning Bolt/etc.) or only using healing wave?
  • If a mob aggros me I die since I can’t get away. How can I escape a mob that aggros me? How do I de-aggro a mob?

as a shaman you will make a fine healer. if you have trouble with mana make sure you have downranked spells (using lower ranks) on your bar for quicker, cheaper casts when you need less. I’m currently running with a shaman tank, and he is doing great. there is more research involved in tanking on a shaman. make sure to look it up first. you can absolutely dps. at low levels you will be doing a lot of melee, at higher levels you will be switching to more ranged spells.

You should ALWAYS wait for the tank to get aggro before attacking. give the tank at least 3 seconds. remember they can miss with their swings and abilities. missing with sunder armor makes your heart sink, and it happens. if you tank is having trouble at the beginning, give them like 5 seconds. there is a complex mess of things to know about threat, but the basic gist is
let the tank secure aggro before you smash the mob

use what seems appropriate for your party. lots of casters? use stoneskin. lots of melee? use strength of earth. have mana for extra damage? throw down your little firebolt buddy. play it by ear and get comfortable, but don’t drop stoneclaw at the beginning of the pull or anything.

you should save your mana for healing if you are healing. keep in mind with flame tongue weapon, your melee attacks deal a fair bit of extra damage. if you want to help dps go up and smack someone with a burning stick. it all adds up, and it’s cheap.

if you get aggro, ALWAYS RUN TO THE TANK. just stand next to them until they pick the mob up. run in circles around the tank. scream and shout, make it obvious, but if they have to chase you then you are making life difficult for everyone.

hope this helps

You can do any role without issue in almost any spec. All that is required is some general intellect.

The post above in response to yours was quite accurate.

If healing, toss an earth shock or some melee damage in the mix. Healing shouldn’t be mana intensive really unless someone isn’t doing their job right. An example would be a mage that pulls aggro constantly due to high DPS instead of throttling themselves, costing you mana.

Stoneclaw totem btw is a great tool to take aggro off you in a pinch. Doesn’t always work, but works.

Look up Defcamp and Melderon’s Shaman videos on youtube. They will help.
