Brain freeze question

Noob question. But I’m going ask it. When you get a brain freeze do you fire off another frost bolt first or just go flurry. Lance. Lance?

Fire the bolt first, then go into BF-Flurry then IL x 2.

I agree with Whispereessa.

From the mage discord:

Frost Mage proc scenarios:
You have FoF procs : Dump FoF procs.
You have BF proc and no FoF procs : Cast FB -> Flurry -> IL -> IL
You have BF proc and FoF procs and are NOT currently casting FB : Dump FoF procs -> FB -> Flurry -> IL -> IL
You have BF proc and FoF procs and ARE currently casting FB : Finish FB -> Flurry -> IL -> IL
All 3 Flurry projectiles refreshes Winter’s Chill to 2 stacks and FB hits before the last Flurry projectile.

This is great
thanks

Additionally, for Shadowlands, it looks like you’ll want to skip the frostbolt if Mirrors of Torment is up.

Add in my own n00b question to this. If you are currently casting FB and get the BF proc, I know you keep casting then do BF —Flurry—IL—IL.

My question is assuming no FoF procs and your not currently casting a FB, and get a BF proc, why do you cast the FB first? I understand it’s part of the “rotation”, but I don’t really understand why. It just seems to me, if you have a BF and no FoF procs you should just cast the BF Flurry, not sure why the FB is needed.

I am fairly positive I am missing something almost every frost mage knows, but in my own defense I have only been playing it since the pre-patch came out.

Kinda makes me miss the good old days of pressing 2 for ten minutes to collect my purples. Just kidding, that was mind numbing. :man_mage: :snowflake: :package:

MOP time warp. Tops… dps… sleep walking.
Now that was fun.

As far as I know, it’s because the FB will also benefit from shatter due to the travel times, so you want to always preceed a flurry with FB.

That said, there isn’t really going to be many situations where you’ve got a BF and aren’t casting, because you should always be casting. There may be some AoE situations though or if BF is about to expire where you won’t want to cast a FB first.

Because Flurry hits the target 3 times, and each hit of the Flurry will refresh the Winter’s Chill debuffs on the target. So you want to Frostbolt first because

  • It will shatter (higher quality icicles = better damage)
  • It can also yield another BF proc which in turn will let you snowball into more damage.

I see, that makes a whole lot more sense now. Thank you Whisper.

ABC - Always be casting. Keep up with your rotation as normal and when you see the proc, finish the frostbolt and unleash hell
