If you think about it they should just have regular elf names. It’s weird that Umbric has such a fitting name for what he became.

I agree. His name was Umbric even back in the day.
I get that we know him as a Void Elf and they want the Void Elves to have names in that regard. But it would have been neat if they underwent a renaming after they were created. Like, a new name they heard whispered, or something. To explain why Elves with literally sunny names had gloomy ones as Rendorei.
But then we have things like the Sunstrider name being a notable thing among the lunar focused Night Elves. As well as the aptly named Cordana Felsong. There was indeed a Warden in WC3 with that name. But even back then, it was a strange name for a Night Elf to sashay about with. Especially if that was a family name since before the Legion even knew about Azeroth.
If Cordana Felsong’s family name goes back to the first Dark Trolls that became Night Elves… talk about fate.
I guess that is just video game/fictional naming conventions for you. I can agree that inventing names can be difficult, so I don’t get too hung up on it. But it does kind of bug me a tiny bit.

(Query): After the fall of Quel’Thalas, didn’t a number of Blood Elves take on new names to better reflect the change of their society?
(Speculative): I think I heard an explanation for this one before. Sunstrider wasn’t a contradiction due to solar/lunar nature, but rather Sun in Darnassian (or whatever the original dialect was for the Highborne Empire), didn’t just mean the big bright ball of burning gas in the sky, but also meant to, ‘Shed Truth,’ on something. Thus, ‘Sunstrider,’ as a surname was, ‘One who strives to bring truth.’
(Commentary): It’s possible that Felsong was a name made after the War of the Ancients, but if it existed before it, it could be that the word, ‘Fel,’ had another meaning in that ancient dialect as well.
Blizzard has a long history of naming characters or even groups based off what they are currently doing. I don’t know which came first, Blackrock Mountain or the clan, but one was clearly named after the other. Dragonmaw clan named that because they were the Orcs riding dragons native to Azeroth.
They can be creative with a lot of things, but they take the lazy shortcut with a lot of things and never look back. Draenor being named after the space aliens that crashed into it.
