Botting - Alternative Solutions

It’s bad out there… The number of bots. The disruption to questing and the economy. Not a great look. Have some new friends to the game that are being turned away from it.

Let us brainstorm as a community a way out of this mess. Maybe Blizzard will get a little brave with this issue someday. For whatever reason the current policy does not effectively address the issue. Maybe for budgetary reasons they can’t have a small team dedicated to banning the bots that are so obviously visible ingame.

Since SoD is about new creative approaches to the game then perhaps it’s time to experiment with disrupting the viability of botting creatively.

So let’s think about other ways. This is my (probably bad) idea.

In a BG if you AFK you are kicked out and barred from queuing for 15 minutes. A debuff can be used to disrupt botting to a frustrating degree and slow the progress of their damage.

Getting x number of reports for botting can lead to a severe debuff that needs to be removed in town from a certain process. This debuff can maybe stop exp gain, loot from dropping, or even reduce durability to 0 temporarily. Maybe it can even flag a bot for PvP in a PvE realm. Maybe even bot-like behavior can get you flagged towards this debuff.

I think the most effective solution is one that combines the community policing the bots and the devs not being afraid to try something new.

If players who bought gold were permanently banned that could help cut the demand for it.

The problem with having x amount of players report someone is that it can be exploited. It would have to be reviewed by a human.

If they gave me the keys, bots would be gone overnight. They could do it also themselves but they choose not to because they make a lot of money off of them. There’s no way around it. It’s not a matter of brainstorming. They can do it right now if they choose to but they will not.

They welcome the bots and work with them in a synergistic profitable relationship. That’s why they do banwaves. It’s good public relations for players but the botters also know that they are free to bot for months on end after a banwave without any risk.

If Blizzard banned them too frequently, it would become unprofitable and the bots would go away. Blizzard would lose all that subscription money so they don’t want to do that.

They are all over the barrens!! I just post their name in general saying bot and hopefully people try to talk to them and just report.

Maybe hire some gms?
