Is this the character that you’re playing OP the one you’re posting with?
I’m curious simply because that character is on Moon Guard - a role play server. I definitely know you do not have to role play but it just seems odd to me you would choose a RP server and not be interested in the rpg aspect.
Or is it just you aren’t interested in the NPCs lengthy exposition? You mentioned pvp - are you in WM? There’s groups for that in the LFG custom group tool if that would help.
So far my favourite quest has been “stand here as the NPCs all talk to each other while remembering to click on them so they know it’s their turn to talk for 30 min”, followed closely by “watch Jaina play with her new hologram projector”.
I was so bored I was watching an aquarium’s live stream feed on my other screen. I was more excited to see the whale shark go by than I was to hear the Oribos squad gossiping about what Janice did last weekend.
Edit; I don’t mind these quests generally, but when 9 out of 10 quests are “watch the NPCs reenact The View”, it gets boring. A balance would have been nice, and there wasn’t any. Makes the Shattrath tour quest seem fun.
Im 55 now and actually enjoyed playing it enough so far that I had a hard time getting off the computer and doing stuff I needed to do. First time for that in over two years.
I’ve played a lot of MMORPGs. Asheron’s Call, Everquest, Runescape, Dark Age of Camelot, blah blah. All fun. All have their different niches. Would I say any of them is or is not an MMORPG? Nope. Though they all do tend to have a story whether you’re forced into it or not. Your point is kind of narrow.
Some let you ignore the story, others did not. MMORPG is a genre which means there variances in them. Some people get very loose with the term RPG.
Most of the stronger contenders in the MMORPG world tended to have a bit of a focus on a central storyline. Especially as the game progressed in later expansions.
Even in tabletop roleplaying the story is kind of central. Otherwise it just turns into rules and rule lawyering centered around combat and loot. If I wanted that I would play a dungeon crawler – which can be open world.
The premise of WoW at this point is that we literally are champions. So, the story driven aspect is fully fitting. It would take severe retconning or a rebranding into WoW 2 to ignore that at this point.
The players should be their own story, not sidekicks kept captive audience to an NPC drama.
When I was playing Everquest, I looked at a map and decided where I wanted to adventure and had great memorable experiences. In WOW, it’s like scene–>scene–>scene–>scene
And if everyone is the Champion that saves the world, no one really is the champion. This is an interactive storybook at this point. Great one time through for some, not so great repeated for many. Just try running your alts through Bastion in sequence again.
I’m not all the way through Bastion on my first main and have brought my second main in. I don’t think I can do this zone more than once. It’s a ton of hurry up and wait and quite frankly it isn’t fun at all. This has killed my desire to have alts. It really has. I’d like to skip this zone, plain don’t want to do it again. I’m starting to think my “only have and play one toon ever” friend has the right idea tbh.
I think its on point that some of the strongest story arcs in the game are currently in cinematics - they are not actually something we learn through play, but are put in at appropriate times to fill us in on what’s happening.
It wasn’t always that way. I recall the huge impact the Wrathgate cinematic had, because it was not only good (which it was) but because it didn’t happen much. No we get cinematics every hour. I do understand that some behind-the-scenes stuff is needed but even that could be revealed to players with a bit of clever questing design.
Well this complaint more or less lies in the realm of how the story is being delivered (as well the quality of it) overall then just an RPG thing.
I personally don’t mind sitting though story segments in any game, but when it begins to drone on, it’s not really a great thing to sit though, whether it be a shooter, hack and slash, or RPG.
For people that don’t like questing I really recommend to give this a try, just for a bit, you might find that you enjoy the game more
Step 1: get the addon immersion https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/immersion or storyline https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/storyline
When you go out to quest, don’t try to focus on getting to this level or finishing up that objective, just sit back, relax and take the time to read the dialogues. I know it’s not the thing for everyone, but give it a try and you might just find a renew enjoyment out of the game. Beware, you might get driven to do loremaster on multiple characters.
Yes that’s actually sort of where I was going with my point. PvE players have always had opportunities to get BIS that PvP players don’t have as easily. Hence, this game is full of diverse play styles (including the RP) and I think it’s okay to dip our toes into each one.
