Boring forced RP story time

Its a consistent writing problem. Blizz vacillates between writing a single-player story line for an MMO and writing a zero-player story with their NPCs.

The idea of writing a pair of stories about two faction’s armies or teams of heroes (ie, the players) apparently simply hasn’t occurred to them.

And of course, everything has to be EPICCC!!! Which somehow means saving the world/universe repeatedly from differently colored (but completely interchangeable) bad guys. I’m pretty sure team purple is going to be the big bads for later patches. They’ve already introduced a past Void invasion of Bastion.

WOW needs to stop trying to craft an amazing storyline and just stick to what they are good with. If I wanted a story and characters to generally care about id play FF14

Either that or they have to be willing to pay good writer’s to write the story.

Right now most of their story seems like really bad fan fiction.

“The dark lady”…enough said lol. So done with this fan fiction story line.

People can buy games for a variety of reasons. They don’t have to buy RPG’s just and only for the story.

we just had forced pvp and now forced rp is a problem for you? Wait till forced pet battles starts.

Agreed, a friend of mine wanted to replay through FF14’s main story with me so we are in the “dreaded” ARR levels as we were curious about the 5.3 trial boss and wanted to see their previous dialogs in the story.

ARR had the common graces to have cutscenes with some light cinematography of camera panning so you didn’t get bored listening/reading to character just talk. How you present story is also kind of a major factor in a format like this.

How is this even a complaint. You realize you can skip through the story elements. You can click through the quest text and exit the cutscenes. You aren’t forced to listen to the story. You can download the Azeroth autopilot mod and it will even do all of that for you.

In the coming year(s) with this xpac will you even remember the 2-3 days you spent doing the campaign?

You only have to do the intro story once, with alts you have the option to skip.

Thats true, i agree. But to imply that your experience is being ruined by a game that literally has RP in it’s design kinda screams disingenuous

You don’t have to listen or read the PvE RP and can just go where the ? marks take you.

This is what an MMORPG is now. What they originated as was worlds in which your character was plopped down into to explore. There was no linear storyline you were forced to follow. Rather you explored your starting zone (usually a racial town with surrounding area), built up your levels a bit, then ventured out into the unknown. Was very free and immersive.

You may have never played that, so you think an MMORPG is just a linear RPG with other players running about. A linear RPG (or MMORPG) is like a good movie, fun to watch the first 1 or 2 times, then it gets old really fast. And for original MMORPG players, such a game feels very stifling and shallow.

54 atm, just made it to maldraxxus or w/e its called, and I have been blow away at how much afk storytime downtime there is. Who asked for this? Handing in a quest and then having to sit there for a minute, sometimes several times in a row, before you can pick up the next one, while some NPC rambles on about some unimportant nothing. Its almost enough to make a person want to throw themselves into the Maw.

If you want a PvP-focused game, World of Warcraft is not the game you should choose. Call of Duty awaits you, and Activision gets your money either way.

Yes, this is RP story time. Why? Because WoW is an RPG.

It really moves at a crawl, doesn’t it? Blizzard is awful with narratives and much better with open ended stories as you explore. This expansion just feels like it’s on rails and the world tiny.

WoW doesn’t feel like an MMO anymore. It’s just another generic 3rd person game trying to be a movie.

Nah, as linear as this is, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s still not as linear as some other MMOs. I’d still put it somewhere in the middle ground.

That’s great news! I’m fairly bored with the little bit of story line I’ve been able to login and see so far, too. So it’s awesome I don’t have to trudge through it again on each alt.

they’re trying to do what FF14 does, in more ways than one in this expansion, problem is FF14 has always been more about the over arching story from AAR to post SL and journey than the end game, wow has been less about the journey and all about the end game so the player base isn’t used to this change in direction

Not to mention the story so far feels like “why am I doing this?” I forgot for a second why we were here, there’s like no link to going through the trials at bastion and looking for Slyvanis. there’s a massive disconnect like in BFA with the war story felt like a side side story to the Zandalari which wasn’t even releated to the heal azeroth story.

I’m sorry there is a link…soul binding the soul bind cause soul bind is soul bind, it’s mentioned so much it’s like a pun at this point. Next we’re going to warn you this site uses cookies to soul bind in these trying times we soul bind in this together…WE GET IT!

It just feels like we’re helping cause thats what the game wants us to do…

Then there’s the plot holes and just odd stuff…like thrall forgot he’s a shaman and can just heal himself? Why is thrall gravely injured on another battle field, and again throws away his weapon, seems too soon for legion memba berries. Jania really going all in with the Elsa thing huh?

What happened to there must always be a lich king? If the LICH KING is afraid to go into the afterlife cause he may succumb to who ever retconned the helm so why would you send in an army of death knights? So the being who at one time controlled the death knights is afraid of losing control but the death knights won’t?

When arthas built the citadel around the frozen spire did he know one day after he’s gone a banshee who died to a lvl 20 dungeon boss would come and break the helm of domination ripping open a portal to the crystal tower on the 1st so he put ruins around this circle in case we need to chase her?

So the lich king can’t come to the land of the dead till he comes to the land of the dead?

I’m making my way through bastion and it’s just mind numbing, it looks amazing but my god after the first few quests it was very obvious what was going to happen, the dialogue could have been “we’re very naive and blindy trust this powerful being, except for sassy pants here who’s a differnt type of naive I’m sure thats not going to come bite us in the behind…soul bind”

yeah how’d that work out for WoW during WoD, end of legion and BFA?
