I swear in Beta I saw someone post screenshots of these lights OUTSIDE of their house.. So imagine my surprise when I go buy some and it’s for indoors only? What the heck?
Is this a bug? Did they make these lights only for inside use now? Or are their different string lights that can be used outside?
I remember they did a pass in beta where a lot of items were “fixed" to be indoor only.

I think those items were originally intended to be interior only but they weren’t working right in beta.
I agree it feels bad.
they are still working out the kinks on it before they revert them. Apparently, some streamers thought it would be funny to load up their yard with every possible item from lighting and it brought down the entire neighborhood. So for now there aren’t really any exterior lights available but I’m sure they will have it fixed and re-added by the time it goes live in March.
Blizzard CS actually responded to this on the official WoW subreddit. It looks like lighting items outdoors are intentionally disabled due to performance issues they’re working on resolving.
The Schmancy Goblin String Lights made with engineering seem to work outside

I gather that option was removed due to intentional abuse of it during Beta (might have been Alpha, I’m unclear on that). I assume they’ll have it fixed so it doesn’t crash the servers and bring it back in eventually, but maybe ask a blue?
What’s funny about this is that if you go into the town area where the vendors are, you can see the string lights hung up outside on a few of the houses
I heard that lightning in exteriors causes server crashes, that is why lighting items do not work outside. Not sure if that’s true but it would track with not being able to place lamp posts outside. I imagine that this is not intentional but something they needed to disable until they can work around it.
Yep, got the engineering recipe today and made four of them for the exterior of my house. They are fully engineered with occasional sparks. The best news was that it was this current expansion, and I had a ton of mats – just needed my wood!
