im new to wow and i wanted to get some opinions on what a safe and fun class would be to main for raiding and pvp content
Fun is subjective. What’s fun for me may not be fun for you. Pick something you enjoy playing.
honestly mate, play whatever you have the most fun with, also by the way moonkin is the most fun
I like the moonkin, they are so cute! If they do gnome druids, I’m going to make four more druids.
Boomkin has smoother and more sustainable DPS.
In between combustion, fire mage can get weak if you don’t get good hotstreak procs. Boomkin also have waaaaay more defenses, being able to heal themselves, barkskin and, if night elf, shadowmeld, to name a few.
The benefit of druid is you can also later go try other roles, whereas mage is only ever going to be dps.
Both have very unique play styles, so it depends on what appeals to you.
If you’re looking for safe, go with a moonkin.
I mean, we’re awesome all-around, but being able to heal yourself while you’re still learning the ways of things is amazing.
That also means mage will usually have an alternative dps spec if one gets nerfed. And let’s be honest Fire will never be bad, devs love it.
If boomie gets nerfed you’re gonna have to play healer, tank or (Rezan forbid) melee.
Any class works for raiding as well as KSM for M+. PvP is a FotM system and changes frequently.
Play what you want, if it isn’t meta now it will be again at some point.
Mage is a safer bet. Its unlikely at least one of their specs will not be on top at any given point.
Balance feels very fotm right now. Wouldn’t be surprised if they get nerfed soon.
fun is subjective.
safe - mage for sure is safe class for raiding and pvp and even M+.
Druid i cannot speak of i think they are the same but your locked to just 1 spec and they got like 4 different ones. tank, ranged dps, melee, and healer so UNLESS you really want that jack of all trade type gameplay and don’t mind playing the meta for w.e. speak is good atm then i wouldn’t suggest druid.
really depends how far you trying to go REALISTICALLY. like pushing world first raiding, rank 1 pvp? or just thinking about mythic raiding and w.e. rank you can hit skill wise. if you just trying to do mythic raiding every class can hit that might not be top 100 but they can clear mythic no doubt. PvP i cannot speak of i don’t PvP or know much. M+ i see a few people who hit very high keys on “garbage” specs so yea they are proving people wrong in that aspect.
Historically Mage is a stronger pick.
However if you’re a new player, you’re not going to get much value out of Fire since it’s got one of the higher skill floors of any specs.
Fire is a terrible spec if you haven’t put the time and effort into learning how to Combust properly, whereas Boomkin has it’s nuances, but unless you’re consistently cancelling Convoke by hitting Alignment immediately after, it’s pretty hard to screw it up.
If you’re looking for a pure dps caster I would choose Mage because you have more options. Unless you want to stay strictly with either Balance or Fire, Fire is more proc-based gameplay and Balance is more – fill your astral power bar up to use Starsurge while using Wrath in Solar and Starefire in Lunar Eclipse.
Fire is honestly more fun to me but I stick with Druid because I have the option to tank, heal, or melee dps as well as ranged dps.
There’s nothing really to combust anymore. lol
This isn’t BFA where you had an entire coreographed dance to pull off. Fire is basically idjit-proof now-a-days.
Maximizing convoke and/or BOAT windows is pretty important though. It’s not really hard but it does require a bit of reading first or your convokes are going to fall a bit flat. Add in trinkets and it gets a little more complicated too (such as ordinance forcing a delay on convoke to maximize damage, for example.)
Ahem… Anyway, @OP play what you think is cool. You’ll do fine.
Edit: This post is from a PVE perspective.
Boomkin is definitely the safest pick for a newer player when it comes to Pvp. Its very durable, has strong damage, and is very intuitive… it’s easy to learn, while having some skill capped things you can do.
While people meme on fire mage and say it’s easy, mage is definitely the hardest ranged damage class in pvp. It’s gotten dramatically easier in recent times but it’s still something that people can’t just pick up and master, it takes time.
Both of these things being said, fire mage is more versatile and overall stronger in the meta right now than boomkin, but I would highly suggest starting pvp on a boomkin than a fire mage.
The amount of absolutely godawful Fire Mages I’ve seen simply because they’re OP in the hands of top tier players would disagree.
Whereas like I said, Balance has it’s nuances but simply going Alignment into Convoke will be more effective than playing a Fire Mage and not combusting well. Though in an ideal world you would learn to optimize both effectively, and then I’d recommend a Fire Mage over a Boomkin.
Plus, Boomkins in general have a much more pug friendly kit. You’re not going to get MDI level Fire Mage results when the average pug tank pulls like an arthritic grandma, whereas Boomkin scales pretty well even on small pulls.
You can’t go wrong with mage. The difficulty isn’t the rotation, which is as simple as every other class, it’s that you can’t waste it. You just can’t take the chance that you’ll get tagged with a scripted mechanic and random ones at the wrong time are a real killer.
Druid is probably safer as it can do all the roles, but you’ll be in demand either way.
Who mentioned the MDI?
They both suck if you play them wrong but they’re both very easy to play.
People will find a way to mess up even the easiest specs though. lol
Go with druid.
Why you ask?
Tank. Healer. 2 dps specs.
Mage: All dps.
But, play both classes, I find mage more fun but that is subjective.
I wouldn’t recommend either of these specs to a newcomer personally. However, if you’re okay with a learning curve or are in love with either of those specs/classes go for it just keep it in mind.
I prefer boomy over fire mage currently. I don’t like the current iteration of fire’s playstyle (it’s a great spec just doesn’t appeal to me, I loved cata fire mage) but I prefer mage as a class as opposed to druid.
If you’re deadset on playing one if those 2 classes pick the one you like more than just the one spec. Different specs will be more powerful with balance changes and stuff so yeah, it’s always good when you like more than just the one spec so you’re not devastated when the nerf hammer rolls around
