Blood vs unholy for DK leveling

What’s better or more fun would you all say

I don’t know how good the AOE from blood is, but with unholy plagues I just wipe entire packs at once with no effort. Also semi-permanent ghoul buddy.

Unholy is more fun, you get more groups playing blood.

For tanking?

Yeah, but blood dps is fine too seen plenty of zerg all dk groups while I was leveling my own dk and half of them were always blood and keeping up almost to unholy but not quite.

I’m the other way around. I find both Blood and Frost far more fun to play that Unholy. I don’t know why, but I just don’t enjoy playing Unholy for some reason.

My answer to the OP would be, which ever one you can play better, or matches your play style better…

How tho they do almost the same thing I was having trouble telling the difference. Death and decay > spread plague > use your specs strike (obliterate, scourage strike, heart strike) = use blood boil

Frost is a bit different with some things ya but blood unholy are like cousins

I tried it, I was convinced. The AOE is really good and I am still a beefy DK so I can handle elites no problem. Blood seems overkill survivability for leveling, unless you’re doing the solo dungeon stuff.

I am also curious about Frost DW but I ain’t got time to be changing specs.

I level capped my dk last weekend as unholy questing. It is absurdly efficient and to me it was more enjoyable than blood.

It also heals itself the same as blood with death strike as 3 diseases is 15% max hp while blood is 2 diseases and 7.5% each one

If you want to solo dungeons blood. If you want to quest and all that unholy.

I didn’t even quest, I just started grinding mobs. With JJ buff I felt like one of those mages in ZF.

The DK can be played in about 5 to 7 different combinations

Blood has 1, there is not much you can do with blood as its a generic one trick pony, put diseases, heart strike, death strike, etc.

Frost has 3,

  1. obliterate/frost strike spam in unholy presence 2H. You never touch plague strike, and only use icey touch or chains at range, as you want to save all the runes for obliterate spam. When out of obliterate and frost strike, blood strike is your last resort filler spell.
  2. DW plague strike specced, icy touch, blood strike, frost strike spam. You get the plague strike talents from unholy, as well as the disease increase time, and your main objective is to keep diseases on target and get off as many auto hits as possible. You will use death strike and never obliterate if in frost presence. In unholy presence, you will instead try and deplete your runes as fast as possible with combination of icy touch, plague, and blood strike, then frost strike for filler between rune cd gap.
  3. DW obliterate/frost strike in frost presence. In unholy DW is inferior to 2H as there are chances youll miss/dodge/parry from offhand and your runes will already get consumed for half damage. No need for shorter GC timer if you are limited by your runes cd.

Unholy has 2

  1. The classic scourge strike, deal as much damage as possible. In unholy presence for maximum speed of getting your runic power and abilities off.
  2. The disease spread healer. Since scourge strike uses the same runes as death strike, you opt out scourge for death strike. That extra disease from your talent increases healing from DS by an extra 5%, making it 15%, similar to if you specced into improved death strike in blood. You play mostly in frost pres for 10% dmg reduction and stam, bone shield, and rely on your ghoul, gargoyle, and diseases to do your damage as you mostly try and survive for long as possible.

you are missing the correct answer… Frost is, by far, the fastest and most fun leveling spec

Does it have a reliable aoe?

Blood is the way to go for solo. Unholy is for groups. You can either pick 1 or dual spec both.

It certainly does. HB with killing machine procs are crazy good. You still have a serviceable DnD and BB hits well. I was easily pulling 10+ mobs all the way from 58-70.

Blood is great for elites but its slow for regular questing and sub par for dungeon tanking. Unholy is the worst for dungeon tanking, more down time, but good aoe
