Block Value Formula

Has anyone figured out the formula to calculate block value? Last I tested it, I had a shield with 6 block value and 60 strength. I was consistently blocking for 8 damage, which implies my strength stat gave me 2 extra block points. Note, I don’t have the port talent for increased block amount. The only formula I’ve found says that it should be
Block Value = Shield block value + (strength/2)
If this were true, I should have been blocking for 36. Does it only count added strength on gear maybe? I forgot to check to see what mine was at the time, but +4 strength sounds reasonable for a level 19 (the level I was testing at).

Let me know what you guys are getting for block values so we can figure this out.

So its interesting you mention this as I had the same issue.
The actual block value though is not what you said.

Paladins, Shaman and Warriors with a Shield equipped have a chance to block 1 Damage for every 20 points of Strength . This was taken from classic wowhead.

Keep in mind this at 60. So I think my testing was I have 87 Str and should get 4 block value.

However I am only getting 2. But I am not 60 yet. So I think its right. Mine seems 2 off. I think that is because of the level scaling.

Would love a blue to chime in on this.

There’s an addon for you. It’s called Extended Character Stats.

Looks like this doesn’t have block value. Only chance.

why should block value from strength scale with your level?
you have less strength with which to get extra block value when you’re at lower levels

It probably doesn’t which would make this a bug. But I am not sure. I do know at 60 20 Strength increases your block value by 1.

I would say its 20 at all levels but would love someone to tell me I am wrong. If I am not then its a bug.

I remember when I first got 20 Strength at like level 8 or 9. My block value did indeed increase by 1. I specifically check it.

This is old. I don’t know how to add links in here. But there is one on wow-head classic that definitely states its 20 per point of str.

Thank you

Both your link and my link look to say the same thing. (distracted playing Classic in the other monitor so I could have missed it)

So yours and the OPs say Strength /2.

The current is 20 Strength per point.

So If you had 80 Strength.

In old it would increase your block value by 40.

In current it would be 4.

Everything is working fine I believe as my Block value matches my math.

Orc Warrior base str is I believe 23. ( this isn’t counted as block value )
I have 119 str - 23 = 96 str

Now 96 str is 4 Block value as I need 100 to have 5 Block value

My shield is 15 Block + 4 (from str) = 19 Block which I get

Hope this helps

RIght. So its based on base Strength not Strength. Good to know.

Now my numbers add up.

It’s minus character str. Depending on what race you are. In the end it still only accounts for 1 block value missing.

When you have 250 str - 23 str = 11 Block value

Most of our BV comes from gear.

Early on it is noticeable though I mean my 19 block on some mobs negates all damage which is nice for me.

Of course sorry got it the wrong way around.

So no point calculating it on Strength that is already there. Make so much sense now. Thanks for clarifying that :).

You sir … made my day.

Thanks for the help guys. The numbers seem to line up better when you subtract base strength and give 1 strength per 20 block value. That’s a massive difference from what me and my friends were thinking it should be.

For posterity:

Total Block Value = Shield Block Value + ((Strength - Character Base Strength)/20)

how much value does something like shield specialization add in pvp?

“Increase the amount of damage absorbed by your shield by 30%”

Is this all physical damage? is it 30% of damage on blocked attacks?

sorry for the noob question
