It took less than 1 minute from me logging in to have some garbage “wwwowohackerfest steal your account dot scammer” chat channel invite notice appear in my chatbox.
This “Block Chat Channel Invite” function urgently requires reworking as currently it only blocks the popup box. It infacts increases the level of spam by adding a second line to the chat box spam stating “You have blocked chat channel invites”.
If you block a person from whispering you they cannot appear anywhere its not like they can message you the message sends then the game says “you are blocking that person” there is just nothing at all, ever.
That is what “Block Chat Channel Invites” should do as well. I should simply forget that feature even exists because of it never appearing.

Is your quality of life that bothered by two lines of text in your chat box? Truly?
I personally enjoy Right Click -> Report Spam so that account gets flagged.

whats the point of block then? would you be fine if blocking a person meant they could still message you? Setting it to block but it then not actually blocking and the dodgy website still even being visible is absolutely pointless beyond words.
also yes I dislike unnecessary chat spam, but chat spam attached DIRECTLY to a feature with a check box to “block” which I have ticked simply shouldnt even be a thing. Block should equal block. It currently does not

This is intentional so that you can report them. People moan all day long about how Blizzard does nothing, but they don’t even want to take half a second to right click on a name themselves.

huh? Are you REALLY arguing against a channel block function?
I do get that, but with the rate they (the spammers) produce throwaway characters personally i’d rather just have a way of turning off their existence entirely. Took less than a minute from me logging in to get my first spam, sending those reports I have done doesnt seem to be helping much if I am only permitted 60 seconds before it starts
It’s fake outrage. It’s a line in your chat box. If that line was some guy emoting a wave you wouldn’t think anything of it. If it was five lines of the same guy spamming his guild recruitment macro every minute you wouldn’t think anything of it. When it’s a line of gold spam that pretty much all of your fellow players hope you take half a second to report to help us all… it’s an outrage and it needs to be gone.

its actually 2 lines, its the dodgy malformed but obvious web address they want you to visit, obviously unsafe and ready to compromise a victims computer. And then theres another line of chat saying “you are blocking chat channel invites”.
Obviously not, and now theres another line of chat telling me all about it. Block = block? apparently not!

Nope. You misread.
The ‘x channel invited you but is blocked’ I say is harmless. While they could add a ‘block the chat message’ option with it, that probably does more harm than good because now you can’t even report the account.
Unless it changed for classic you can just uncheck the box for channel chat in chat settings
Poof, gone, along with all the other custom channels
And no you can’t report them at that point but hey you aren’t inconvenienced by a few lines of chat in your window anymore

problem here is that blizzard now has adequate data on what these guys are doing: until their new technique comes out, blizzard has room to go ahead with the extra step of blocking invites and showing NOTHING in your chat, thus removing it as an advertising angle. Further RCRs will legit do nothing.
And if you do have a channel you’d like to invite specific people to, just whisper them to /join it. Until these spammers started doing this, a vast majority of the playerbase had no idea channel invites existed, even those of us dating back to OG wow.

still getting spammed by these dodgy gold hackers.
If something is blocked it should NOT exist in ANY capacity. In chat in popup in whisper in thought whatever.
Make Block Block Again!

They did it like this for 2 simple reasons.

You can report the cheaters for cheating.(that’s what gold selling is listed under in the ToS. It’s not spam. It’s cheating. They haven’t said anything in any chat channel. So how is it spam? I believe spam reports are handled by the automated mods.
I believe the automation checks for spam in chat channels and sees none. So they don’t get banned.
I was reporting as spam. Kept seeing the same names. Started reporting for cheating. New names and less invites. So that seems to be working.
Report as cheating and tell blizz in the report to add a level restriction on channel invites.

You can still recieve legit channel invites.(which hardly anyone outside of gold farmers use.)
Ignoring a problem does not fix the problem.

right click reporting doesnt fix it either. Do you know how many times the same name has attempted to send me a spam invite? None. its not like if i hit report then they all just go away. They send the spam i see “zzzwwwhackwer godlspamcomusdollar474746335” sent by “asdgkfjhsd” then the next time its zzzwwwhackwergodlspamcomusdollar474746336" sent by “asdgkfjhse”
As for legit chat channels, if its a friend and someone I know and we arranged it then i would switch off the blocking, get them to send the invite, accept it and join.
I dont want pop up boxes and i dont want zzzwwwhackwer godlspamcomusdollar474746335 spam in my chat box either. Why is it too much to ask? Why is it imperative that people be required to see the spam?
I have to say by that logic ignoring a person should then still allow their messages to come though. Ignoring them wont fix anything! Oh and after their message is sent, a second line of chat should appear telling you “you are ignoring this person”
No. By your logic when your car starts making strange noises, turning up the radio fixes the problem. Seems to be blizz’s philosophy as well.
Report for cheating and ignore. You’ve done your part trying to fix the issue by sending a report. It’s on blizz after that. I add to every report i send: “Please level restrict chat channel invites to prevent this”.
They may not read the forums, or spam reports, but I’m betting someone looks into the cheating reports.
Get enough people reporting for cheating we will get something done.
Hell you may get a blue response over in CS on this. They actually engage some topics over there.
I’m not an employee of Blizzard. If I block channel invites that should be the end of it. Pretty simple. If they care about catching these guys they can pay a GM to sit in game. Again, pretty simple. And something that private servers seemed to manage just fine.

It’s not a matter of “quality of life,” it’s a matter of "this feature only half-@ss fixes the problem.
I fully agree with OP, because having them blocked should mean I receive zero contact from them at all. If they find another method to spam us? I’ll report that.

Yeah, but if they changed it, then the gold spammer couldn’t advertise to you still. This is by design, they want you to see the gold spammer ads.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Blizzard even got some kick backs from the gold spammers, or charged them a fee so their messages are still seen.
