Criticism doesn’t hurt them. If anything, it helps them, though perhaps only marginally, in monitoring the state of the game.

Because there are a many ways to interpret data, and people will interpret any data to fit any narrative they have in mind and use it against Blizzard.
No need to share this data with anyone. They did the right thing otherwise the forums will be full of 'these numbers are proof of ‘whatever my argument is’.

I think Blizzard doesn’t want people reading too much into populations, as they’re expected to ebb and flow during exciting/boring retail periods.
