Blizzard, if fans can make the landscapes in a short time, why can't Blizzard with a much larger crew upgrade the WoW game engine?
Wow still runs on 1 CPU core, and is a huge bottleneck on system capabilities...

So you want them to re-code and entire game on a new engine?
Let me know how that works out for you.

Too much work for too little gain.

There is a difference between making landscapes and making gameplay.
Secondly, why spend all that time making good graphics when you're going to cover half of it up with UI prompts, talking head windows, loot pinata dropdowns and giant glowing particle effects?

Because (1) they are a for-profit public corporation and (2) millions still buy $50 expansion packs for this decade-old game. Zero incentive for them to upgrade the visuals.
Yessssssssssssssssssssssss
Make WoW Great Again

1. The point of WoWs setup is to run easily on any system basically.
2. To upgrade the engine would mean redoing the entire game, and your preference on landscape/art assets might differ from another player who likes the cartoon style.
3. You're looking for a new MMO maybe? Or a WoW 2?

Even if they changed the engine, they'd almost certainly keep the same painterly/cartoonish art style and end up with something more like Fortnite.

The lighting and post effects are nice and all, but hardly "hey, lets spend years and millions of dollars on a marginal upgrade" nice. Besides, they can always add junk like distance field AO or volumetric fog into their own code if they wanted it..

To date, no other MMO runs nearly as smooth as this one does. SWTOR came the closest, and I'll admit ESO wasn't bad either, but nothing is as buttery smooth as WoW. That's on the engine, and like others have said: they're going to have the same cartoony style anyhow, so what's the point?
That said, multi-core optimization would be nice. Very nice.

You are aware overhauling a game engine is one of the most expensive and time-consuming things they could do, right? I mean they've been making optimizations over the years but, anything major will require a pretty big overhaul.
That and they purposefully set the bar low as to get as many subscribers as possible (requiring a powerful PC may work for Witcher but not for WoW).
Also, if you are asking for a new graphics engine they might as well just do WoW 2.

If they were going to do something like that, then wrath or cataclysm would have been the time to do it. We're so far into this storyline now, that we're going to be running out of big bads within the next two xpacks.
They're not going to bother with it at this point. They'll keep doing small iterations to keep that old game looking as fresh as possible but I'm sure that will be it.
Edit: I don't watch those videos anymore. It's just painful to watch them. The WoW in my mind and the WoW we play are vastly different. Those videos are just a peek at the kind of things that I think about when it comes to this game.

To be honest, I don't really like those. Feels more like I'm on Blade and Soul or something than WoW. I love the "feel" of WoW. Only game I get that.
No thanks
I've yet to see one of those videos showing anything other than landscapes. World of Warcraft is not empty landscapes. There's player character models , monster models , NPC models , critter models , spells and a whole mess of things all of which you have to think about how it's going to interact with the landscape. It's possible that manage how models clip with other models is just easier when the engine you are using is one you've written in house.
Also Epic have royalties fees which are "5% of all gross revenue after the first $3,000 per game or application per calendar quarter, regardless of what company collects the revenue". Some quick napkin style maps shows that $750,000 per million players paying $15. With Millions of players that adds up to quite a large chunk of change that would need to be paid per quarter. Compare that to say FMod's licensing fee which is a max of $15,000 (which from my quick research looks like you only need to pay once)
What if they overhaul it to a Unreal-like engine ? That's a lot of work without much of a payoff. Sure it'll look pretty once you figure out any and all clipping issues with all the models you might have in that landscape. But you run the risk of freezing at people on hardware incapable of running all of it fast enough. So you either lose out of money from people unsubscribing as their computers aren't quite good enough to run world of warcraft ... or you run 2 graphics engines at the same time increasing development time and upkeep/maintenance costs

Clueless, party of one...

They might actually lose (subs/profit) something rather than gaining something.
i remember when Blizz announced the system requirements for BfA, there were multiple threads complaining about it.
Imagine if they made the game using Unreal Engine 4...

in order for Blizzard to update their current engine they would have to stop supporting Windows XP.

This is why I and a few other MVPs are waiting with baited breath to see how good Blizzard's DX12 implementation will be like on BfA Alpha.
I understand better multiple-core optimization is possible with DX12.

That's not really how it works, you can actually run much better looking and more modern games on much cheaper (modern) hardware these days, look at the FPS and graphics on a game like Witcher 3 in a crowded area.
Its a massive undertaking there's no doubt about it but it would be great if they had another studio working on the task for a few years parallel to the main team so it could be dropped on us in a couple of expansions time.
I think it has to happen at some point if they want the game to compete with newer MMORPG's on the market that look infinitely better but don't have the depth of content that WoW has, just remember that WoW wasn't always number one, it topped another game and we don't want the next big thing to wipe us out 5 years from now >.<
