Why does the item Whiptail Stem cost 800 gold deposit to list on the auction house? I just posted 5 of these with TSM, and didn't notice until I was out nearly 5k and has to figure out what the heck is going on.
Is this a bug, or is Blizzard just trying to scam me for my gold?
Research, my friend. You pay for a full stack worth for a deposit no matter how much you put in a stack. You get that back if it sells.

I've probably lost around 30k over the past month posting stuff at ridiculous deposits, and never even noticing it.
I'm really frustrated that Blizzard would randomly jack up deposits of items like that, or even have them at such unreasonable numbers. Under no circumstance should a random herb item every cost over 100 gold per item to list. And if they really intended that price--for the love of God--FREAKING TELL THE PLAYERS!
I have a hard enough making gold the way it is, so I farm old content and throw everything on the market board with TSM. I'm just so frustrated that I've probably lost out on a lot of money due to some stupid decision Blizzard made. It's like they were trying to scam me out of my gold by giving some vendor trash an unreasonable deposit cost.
I'm just so pissed. At least with Azerorite armor, I was annoyed, but I knew Blizzard wanted to do good, but outright jacking up my deposit costs without telling me is borderline malicious.

A full stack of herbs should never cost 800 gold to list.

There was plenty of information posted when this change was put in.
It wasn't randomly put in btw.

Yeah I hate it too. Blizzard ruined AH.

They did tell the players. This change was announced months ago as a means to combat the sellers who would flood the AH with 200 stacks of 1 item.

If you post in stacks of less than 20, the deposit skyrockets. This is to discourage single stack posting.

they upped the price of specific items (mostly mats) to stop people from listing them as singles because it kept flooding the AH and would break it on more populated servers
I don't think it was a good idea to apply the changes to old expansion items, but they did give warning beforehand. Unfortunately not everyone reads the forums and/or twitter on a regular basis.
From what I understand the changes are temporary until they can fix the auction to better support a million stacks of one.

08/22/2018 09:49 AMPosted by YthisensNow imagine an additional 20% deposit added to the listing fee per auction. With an asking price of 10g each, that raises the deposit by 2g per stack. In the case of 1 stack of 200 linen, the total buyout price is 2000g, and the new deposit is 2g1s. In the case of 200 individual stacks, the new deposit of an additional 2g per stack brings the total deposit up to 402g.
They're talking upwards of 402 gold for a stack of BFA materials. Why the heck is a random cata herb costing 800 gold (almost double the BFA material) to list.
Even if this change was logical. The idea of Cata stuff having vastly higher deposits costs has to be broken. Seriously, who'd want to buy or sell Cata herbs if the 'minimum' price to list a partial or full stack begins at 800 gold?
I wouldn't be so pissed if I lost like 100-500gold randomly with a reasonable increase, but losing upwards of 30,000 gold over a few weeks is broken.

Not random at all. Blizzard made an official statement regarding the deposit cost increase. All this in an attempt to reduce the AH lag which kinda worked I guess because it's way smoother on my end since they changed that.
Can't blame Blizzard for your loss sadly it's all on you :/

You are missing some critical information. I will say it again. You get the additional deposit back when it sells. The cost of this deposit does not need to flow over to your buyers.
So putting up a bunch of low stacks you do so at your own risk.

I read that they were increasing the deposits costs to help deter spam, but raising the deposit to 800 gold for Whiptail and up to 1,000 gold for Stormvine is broken.
No matter how you swing it--that's broken. That's not discouraging single-listings--that's outright making it prohibitively expensive to even sell any whiptail or stormvine
The price being at 800-1,000 gold does not sound like an intended change, but rather someone screwing up royally. And their screw-up is costing people thousands of gold.
Under no circumstance should a stack of Cata herbs cost nearly a thousand gold to list. It's broken, and I'm pissed I lost money on it.

You get the deposit back if you sell. If it's not selling and costing you a ton of money in deposit fees, maybe you shouldn't play auctionwatch?
Either way, Blizzard didn't scam you out of anything. It's obvious the change is serving its intended purpose of decluttering the AH of trash auctions.
