Oh? You knew of Herod for weeks before name reservations began? Are you sure about that? Because if so, the numerous guilds that seemingly only had a handful of days to recruit/organize/herd cats would like to know how you knew such.
THREE of the original PVP servers are in this state now. We still have 4 days to go before release.
Blizzard may be vague but they have also pretty clearly explained the state of overpopulation. The population cap back in vanilla was super low compared to modern WoW. They have explained that a MEDIUM server today is more players than the MOST populated Vanilla servers ever had. So the idea that you need to roll on a FULL server or you won’t have anyone to play with is just entirely… dumb. I’ve got 1 name on 3 servers, but when it comes down to it… I’ll be going to whatever server gives me the no queue, or the smallest queue, come launch day.
There were 3 days between the announcement of server names and the start of name reservations. I would like you to loan me your T.A.R.D.I.S. so I too can predict things weeks in advance when the rest of the world gets 3 days.
I think there’s also this misguided idea that “the best stuff” will be happening on this overpopulated servers. The idea that you will be missing out if you don’t roll on Herod. It’s not true. Maybe “pro” guilds roll there and maybe get world first whatever, but chances are, even if you go there, you won’t be included because the queue times are going to have you 25 levels behind the curve.
And how long have players had to scream to blizzard that the number of servers was comically low? You know, those Day 1 servers which a large portion are now in dire straits?
Layering is their answer to that, and it’s a good answer. I far prefer them use Layering and then phase it out, than to open too many servers and have to merge them later. Even if the number of servers was too low or not, that has nothing to do with the decision en masse to continue rolling on Herod after it was Full, and then to continue after Blizzard has said the queue will be over 10k.
I don’t think they are failing to understand anything. They know their playerbase and the fact that classic is happening at all shows they do.
I think they know exactly what they are in for in the coming weeks/months. At launch Classic will enjoy massive popularity. Over time (say 1 year) the populations of all the servers combined will be a FRACTION of the population at launch. For people who played the game at launch back in 2004, classic will be one of two things… 1. A reminder of just how far the game has come and will quit within a year; or 2. A fun trip down memory lane that is better than what they are experiencing in retail so they’ll stick around.
For people experiencing Classic’s play system for the very first time, they’ll have a slightly different view… 1. The game was better back then because it was harder and consequently, is worth playing long term (more than the first year); or 2. The game back then was too hard and they’ll quit within the first year.
Given those two possibilities (played Wow at launch, or didn’t play wow until much later expansions), the population of all the servers combined will be a pale shadow of what it was at launch.
The die hard Classic fans will play regardless because they’ll be unwilling to admit that they were wrong and this ISN’T what the overall playerbase wants.
I am looking forward to classic, but I am realistic about what it is and what it isn’t. Unfortunately, I am in the minority and many people who have been waiting with baited breath since it was announced are going to be MASSIVELY disappointed in the game because it was stale by 2006 (which is why expansions exist… to fix issues that a majority of the playerbase encountered as they played the game long term).
Two years is about how long I expect Classic to be “popular.” By the beginning of the 3rd year, servers will be ghost towns.
I think what’s not going to plan is the unwillingness of people to roll off a server there are minimal connections too.
What’s crazy is that Herod has seemingly gotten worse.
The faster we shift numbers from the full servers among the newer servers and fill those up the faster Blizzard will give us new servers to populate too.
I’d imagine it be much easier now before the game and queues start to move your groups around.
Exactly, Mini. Far easier to move now. People are so worried about their precious names, though. Spread the population and then Blizzard would be able to better determine what servers should be added in terms of timezone and server type. I expected to see the RP servers around Medium, but last I checked there’s some non-RP servers still not even at High.
This is literally the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. This is how to put a nail in the coffin- no matter how much a fan of vanilla you are, if you can’t get into a server your friend is on, it’s over.
They’d bleed half their population in the first week.
Like, now you are just making up numbers, Nostradamus.
We were told that servers would allow several servers worth of players on each server. There was NO indication from blizzard that they did not have an actual plan for large server populations. Stop pretending you are some wizard who knew that 3 of the 5(?) day 1 servers would turn into “maybe too many to even get into a queue”
So you kindly tell your friend to choose to be a smart person and roll somewhere else with you. Honestly, playing by myself without 4+ hour queues is more fun than sitting in 4+ hour queues with my buddies.
I have recently been in a conversation with another small guild that my guild was thinking of joining up with but it fell through for a reason that is really making me think about why some guilds just will not move: They already made deals with gold farmers.
Seriously this other guild did not want to switch servers because they already paid a gold farmer money for gold in a game not launched yet. They were to get their gold two weeks after launch on the Herod server.
