I’m not sure if this is going to get flagged for bringing up p-servers, but listen.
Ascension is probably the most unique p-server out there. For those who are unfamiliar, Ascension did something unique with “their take” on WoW. They have Classes are nonexistent. Everyone is a hero instead. At level 1 you can infinitely reroll for a random selection of abilities. every other level you get assigned a new ability. By the time you’ve reached 60 you have a unique hero with a unique kit of abilities. Ascension did a very good job on their wild card mode. Leveling to 60 feels like leveling in diablo in the sense that it’s fast paced. Its a platform that meshes well with seasons, too. So the replay value is definitely there.
The only thing missing from Ascension’s “Wildcard Mode” is Blizzard. If Blizzard was running the show, it could really shine. There is a phenomenon about having a big gaming company running the show versus the little guy.
I’m not sure on the legal boundries, but I’m pretty sure if Blizzard wanted to they could set up “Wildcard Mode” servers for those who wanted to partake in that style of gaming without having to worry about copyright laws.
It would give the players something else to do when they need a break from the hellacious grind that Classic brings that we’ve all come to love.
I have been thinking about this a lot lately. If Blizzard more or less copied the outline of Ascension, it could be a big hit.
You know, this actually sounds fun. If they did something like this it would, of course, have to be a completely separate server, if not a separate game altogether. Under no circumstances could it mix with Classic. But yeah, sounds neat.
Sorry I was very unclear. Wildcard mode is classless WoW. you get assigned random abilities at level 1, rerollable until you start leveling. After level 10, every other level grants you a new random ability. It would be almost impossible to have to level 60’s with exactly the same abilities.
It’s something light. A break from the long grinding of classic. It would be heavily unbalanced, it would be raw.
Personally, I don’t see a problem with Blizzard making various wacky “fun servers”. I mean, why not? It’s something to do and a it’s a great place to start training new developers. Just be sure to warn players that these “fun servers” aren’t subject to mainline customer/tech support and they aren’t to be taken too seriously.
After all, the whole Dota genre started as a Warcraft 3 mod, right? Why shouldn’t Blizzard play around with their own assets!
This sounds like an incredibly lazy design choice. What a mess. All of the skills available to a class were designed to work with one another, and this “wildcard mode” throws that out of the window. RNG mechanics should only be implemented when necessary, especially in regard to core mechanics such as class skills. I pity the players who are given a bad batch of skills throughout their journey to 60.
