Fair enough, but subpar is entirely subjective.
And no, I wouldn’t work for any gaming company, way too old to deal with that kind of drama. Trying to create something for ungrateful people would drive me to drink.
True, some of it is deserved, though ;).
Is Blizz union? If not, no way in hell. If they are, they need some serious restructuring, or a new union because it seems like the current ones are pretty inept.
After that, maybe.
Welp the first link is fake news. Guy says Diablo IV will be a first-person game made in the Overwatch engine. lol
in the 1990s…sure.
Today?
Not to make me a grilled cheese sammich
Do not know about trust, but by the jobs listed, it seems like Shadowlands might be in big trouble. I mean they are looking for senior people, this does not bode well for us im afraid.
Who said it was for SL specifically though?
Unless I missed something, they’re hiring for several projects.
This was also something they talked about during the earnings call, it’s literally why they laid off so many non-essential people, so they could hire more developers to work on more projects lol.
I don’t think it is trust. Since we are protected by laws.
Im sure they’ve lost even more after the layoff. I know I’d be looking if my company just laid off 800 people.
I hope I’m wrong but we’re gonna get a half-a$$, rushed out the door with far less R&D pile of Activision cash grab crap.
I hope I’m wrong but I’m a smart guy and I’ve been doing this a long time. I know what it takes to develop games like this, fully test and tune them, and get them to GA release.
I already paid for shadowlands so I’ll be at release to try it out… but honestly, if I hadn’t bought it yet… The combination of its lackluster feature list, a considerable layoff BEFORE a major version bump (that is a VERY bad sign) and the shock and awe over how bad 8.3 was, I’d probably be gone never to come back again at this point. At least not until 10.0… if that ever even happens.
Agree with you 100%.
Let me share what was once a childhood dream when I was a wee lad: I wanted to work in a video game company and make video games
See, I played a lot of video games, and figured “why not make video games since i like playing them so much”
Thankfully by the time I came of age it turns out making video games, at least in a big studio, is a stressed filled hellhole with folks working 60 hour weeks and killing themselves to meet deadlines and that was enough for me to look at that and go, “Nah, I’ll stick to just playing the games”
Isn’t really an issue of trust: They’re an employer, and employers by law are forced to do things, but it’s more “Wow I’m pretty sure the whip they’re cracking over Shadowlands is more fierce than any Succubus I know, don’t want any of that”
(That’s implying I even meet the requirements for any of the jobs and I probably don’t although I’d love to give writing official lore a shot)
There was a time I’d have killed to work at Blizzard. But now I like the security of my current job, with clear road-maps for improvement and certifications. I will pass on a Blizzard job.
No to mention working on a game, ruins the game for you.
I was at SOE when EQ1 launched. I wasn’t even directly working on the game, I was developing infrastructure and automation, even still, I was kinda sick of the game already. Just from being pulled into internal stress tests and play test sessions.
This would be my biggest reason not to be a game designer tbh
Also why I don’t buy into the whole “write the book you want to read” argument.
Seeing the sausage being made kinda ruins it. Just from hearing cubicle discussions and stuff you learn to much about what goes on under the hood and it kinda kills the in-game experience.
Also why I never like to beta test stuff. I just wanna wait and be surprised by the full game on release day. That’s why I’ve never bothered with a single WoW beta.

I avoid betas, any sort of videos or reviews for a game.
People buy way too much into the hype and ruin it.
I want to be surprised when I play a game.
Not to mention, other people reviewing a game isn’t my review of the game as I like different things.
Idk if I’m allowed to work for them its conflict of interest over some stocks I own
I would trust them the same way I trust any other place I’ve worked, and that is that they pay me on time, I get some vacation and some benefits. Aside from that, I work in a at will state which means I can be let go at any time for any reason and I can quit at any time for any reason so that’s as far as my trust goes when it comes to work.
They should be firing. Then hiring.
Owning stocks is not a conflict of interest in the United States.
How would they even know you own them? It would be illegal for them to ask.
I work for apple. I own stock in Amazon, Oracle, Samsung (actually recently dumped this stock), Tesla, Microsoft and Google all current or soon to be current competitors.
In fact, if you have a 401k with a previous employer, you probably have a porfolio layered across many tech stocks.
