Blizzard is censoring harsh words in game now

They don’t use the hard R.

The hard R -only- has racist connotations.

How would you know if you were reading the word in a book by Mark Twain?

She referring to in Modern Day. Your example would be more historical linguistics case in which technically wouldn’t be said with a hard r though written as such as Southern Accents were and in some cases still are Non-Rhotic (I should know my dad is a horrible racist and uses the word on a daily basis but his speech is non rhotic so the ending isn’t pronounced) and so is AAVE which is why speaker of it never have to worry about pronouncing the hard R as it isn’t naturally to do so in speech. In modern times the division is made as Rhotic speech is the most Common in the US and so the word has divided between the old racial spelling and the newer spelling used in AAVE.

So when the EXACT SAME word is used by your Dad, it’s racist, but when it is used by Rap artists, it’s not racist? That literally makes no sense.

it kind of falls outside of the governments job description.

they may be the law makers, but they’re not the enforcers.

and i agree with your sentiment here.

if it’s racist, it’s racist.

it’s racist to say someone can’t use a word based on their skin color.

If you study World History, many governments have ENFORCED what Art it’s people could and could not consume.

It’s racist in the case of my dad even if he a non-rhotic speaker because of his intent and context he uses it. As for among speakers of AAVE it’s a divisive topic as far as I know. The rapper usage of it was apart of an attempt to rehabilitate the word in the black community. Whether or not that worked is up for debate and the fact you don’t hear it in polite company or in the speech of elective officials shows the more racist origins of word still holds sway in many minds and is the reason many speaker of AAVE still won’t use the word as well.

and what about “non rapper” usage of it?

eg: Olivers Army by Elvis Costello?
…or is that ok because “context”?

Freedom of speech protects you from the state. It does not require that a company must allow any kind of speech on their platform, as it shouldn’t

It’s not really my place to say as I’m not a speaker of AAVE and as part of study to get my linguistic degree it was only a small part of it in my American Dialects course and I didn’t elect to take the course dealing with AAVE in which they could have covered that, I’m a speaker of Appalachian English lol.

Saying that one group can use a word and another group can’t use the exact same word is the textbook definition of discrimination.

Indeed, communities including speech communities by their very nature is discriminatory as you divide those who are insiders by those as outsiders which is a normal process.

Edit:also can I say our names is making me laugh imagine Pythagoras and Henry Sacheverell having this conversation.

It’s just an English word, used in English terms, by an English singer.
I’m not sure how your American Dialects course comes into it.

…I was just asking an opinion :stuck_out_tongue:

Look at all of the people here, defending their right to say racial slurs. Ahhh. The forums.

Sorry, given my previous replies was dealing with historical linguistics and language communities I thought you wanted me to extrapolate about the position of that songs usage among users of AAVE which I have no clue as I have neither researched it or am a part of that community.

As for my own personal opinion I don’t really have one on the topic as I don’t know the song or the artist and could not care in the slightest in making a value judgement in these sort of things.

That would be quite the conversation.

It took me about my second post to realize I’m posting on my Sacheverell character in a thread about Free Speech perhaps I should have been more angry and hellfire about all of this to be more in character.
