Blizzard Employees Staged a Walkout to Protest Banned Pro-Hong Kong Gamer

That’s why they’re trying to market and capitalize off those feelings with remake after remake and rerelease.

Wasn’t there a Bliz dev on a stream joking about 70% of WoW subscriptions are from China? Their overall profits might show otherwise, probably because nobody plays things like Overwatch in China, but getting WoW banned in China might just kill the game.

People need to get used to this.

Well, look at the bright side, it’s proof that Blizzard listens to someone, even if we’ve been speaking the wrong language all this time.

Hey, think they’d actually improve classes if we posted in Chinese?

No. People need to continue to complain and make companies releasing products in the FREE WORLD realize their will be consequences for forcing the views of undemocratic regimes onto consumers who don’t even live under that regime.

Look at the NBA. China is trying to force the NBA through cancelling contracts to adhere to a NON Freedom of Speech policy that China enforces.

And Trump specifically left it up to the NBA to handle, and you know what the NBA will do? Continue to pander to China, because they contribute a decent and quickly growing pile of money.

There are a billion people in China, and as China get richer and as their middle class continues to grow the amount of pressure they will be able to exert will eclipse the few people protesting in the West.

So yes, you WILL have to get used to it.

Staged a supposed protest and spoke under the condition of anonymity :joy::+1:

This is shocking! A company making a decision based on what they feel is in their best interest ! HOW DARE THEY !

Seriously you people calling out blizzard for banning a dude that potentially could have caused them to lose business if they didn’t take immediate action is ridiculous.

Some of you don’t seem to understand what running a successful business means and keeping it that way. Company’s are there to make money. That’s it, nothing else matters except making money. Welcome to the real world.

You morals means nothing when it comes to business.

Its easy to impose grand ideals on others when you dont have to act on them yourself.

Its easy to sit there and whine about a company doing something for the sake of keeping business and relations on a good level without caring about people and their morals when you are not in their position. What do you think would have happened if they didnt take action ? They could potentially lose billions. Would you drive your business into the ground because of your morals ? I bet you wont.

What happened and is happening over there is terrible. Blizzard did what is best for business. If you ran a global business you would understand but you don’t. Most of you don’t but its so easy for you to sit there and whine about what they did because it was “Wrong”. It does not matter if its wrong or right. In the end its about RUNNING A BUSINESS AND KEEPING IT AFLOAT.

I guess people fail to realize that “free speech” doesn’t necessarily come without consequences. Yes, you can say what you want without fear of prosecution, but you can still be fired, banned, removed from premises, and in this case, forfeit potential winnings, etc.

Don’t do it, you can get banned for that.

Honestly I’ve no idea what the actual market share is. But I did post a link provided by another player that suggests Asia is not a huge customer. I don’t know which information is accurate.

Asia may not be a huge customer to Blizzard, but anecdotal evidence suggests they’re big in WoW?

I do know they have like 60 classic servers to NA’s 30 something 0.0

I didn’t know that. I did know that legally to do business in China, Blizzard had to modify several graphical effects in the game. I would expect that they have had to bend over on a lot of other dictates by the Chinese government too in order to be granted permission to license its software in China.

Really? I didn’t know that was bannable. In fact, I found the information in a these forums from players who (claim to) use this setting.

Thanks for letting me know. Post deleted.

There are actually closer to 1.5 billion people in China. But thats like 18% of the world’s population. Studies have shown close to 55 to 60% of the world lives under Democracy.

Do not let China dictate the “rules” for the 60% of the people living in Democracies. They do not outnumber freedom. It is because people in democracies let China dictate conditions that companies get away with it because companies fear no loss of money from their consumers in democracies.

It’s not strictly about population, it’s about potential consumers, which is where China’s exploding middle class come in. 44% of the world live in extreme poverty so they’re not going to matter in the eyes of businesses, but China’s increasing wealth and their exploding middle class is potential consumers. That means they now wield power.

Businesses mostly don’t care much about your freedom and human rights, they want money. China can offer that. They will exert pressure because of this.

Its about setting a precedence, you can not have people breaking the ToS and getting a slap on the wrist, especially when thousand of dollars are on the line. You sound silly.

EDIT: So many people didn’t know about the blood and gore being replaced with bread thing? And the bones thing?

Same. I think i got perma-labeled a troll. Hasn’t helped that I made two topics that got 404ed.

It’s not like I really care since I rarely post articles or desire to post a meme.

Back to the OP though, I see it Blizzard’s way. The company had to choose and follow its rules set in place long ago. Legally speaking, Blizzard owns all content and platforms for which revenue is derived. Blizzard has the right to keep the money and continue the ban. This protester picked the wrong platform, and knew the consequences.

I stay out of politics, religion, and other such divisive topics because they are not pertaining to whatever game we are playing. I’ve skirted a few and got 404ed, so I know just how serious everyone is behind the banter.
