Blizzard does not respect my time as a player.
This is an explanation of why I have canceled my active sub of 10+ years. If you don’t care, you can move on.
I’ve been trying to find a reason to continue to sub. But after today, I can’t do it. Over the last few years, Blizzard has repeatedly shown that they do not respect my time. Three of the biggest examples are below.
-
Overwatch 2 rollout and subsequent changes. Blizzard closed down the old Overwatch 1 servers and forced players to move to Overwatch 2. Things like Play of the Game, “MVP”, and the in-game overlay to determine how you were doing in match were removed. Players were instead promised PVE content and additional maps. What we got was a battlepass system that locked heroes and skins behind a real money battlepass. If you wanted to earn the currency you had to play an insane amount of time to even come close.

Diablo 4. Similar to OW2. New content is seasonal. You literally can not continue progression on your main and take part in the seasonal content. Each new season requires a new character. In addition to this, the battlepass is real money. You can not earn enough currency from the current battlepass to pay for the next one. The first season also required you to activate the premium battlepass in order to take part in the normal battlepass. This was later stated to be a bug…but let’s be real. It was intentional.

WoW Classic SoD bait and switch. SoD was described as a remix on Classic WoW with some new elements. Play your way, raid with your friends. Etc. Phase 3 now has end game content locked behind 20 player raids. Phase 4 will likely continue that but may also have 40 man raids. The WoW Classic devs listen to the Hardcore Raiders and ignore the smaller guilds. The community manager is of a mind that you should have multiple guilds that you run with if you want to see all of the content.
As someone with a life outside of Blizzard products, I don’t have the time to hop on for hours at a time and grind at battle passes. I don’t have the time to grind at leveling in retail and classic and miss out on content that is gated towards large raids. Tack on to that the outrageously toxic environment inherit in Blizzard’s games and I would rather find other things to spend my time on.
I don’t expect this post to be met with positivity. I’ve played with enough players to know that. But maybe someone at Blizz will see it and take note that some of the older, more level headed players are leaving because our time is no longer respected.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Absolutely correct. And actually my point. In the battlepass examples above, if you want to experience a majority (or all) of the content for OW2 and D4, you will have to play an insane amount of game time. For D4 you will also need to spend real world money just for the opportunity to get that content. You also need to roll a new character each season to be able to experience the content for that season, further increasing your game time.
Given the transient nature of the SOD content; you need to spend a lot of time in game while the phase is active just to level, gather mats, and gear up to raid. This cycle repeats for each phase.
To enjoy/participate in current Blizzard content you need to dedicate a massive block of time just logged in and actively playing the game. Even if you just want to see the content and don’t care about maxing out your gear, etc.
So, yeah. It IS ok to go play other games.
ok cya in a couple months

Transmog Gear, Mounts, battle pets, cosmetics, whatever the new currency is for the Trading Post. You’ve got a killer idea for the stockholders to perk up about, my friend.
Fortunately WoW doesn’t have a battle pass and will not have a battle pass.
You dont put an additional monthly sub on top of a sub. Battlepasses are for non sub games.
Weird you dont want to play WoW because of OW2/D4 design. But you do you.

Mm?
Are devs putting in tools for player retention a “battle pass” now?
Didn’t they mention WoW (SoD) also in their original post or was that put in after your response?
@OP: Some fair points. They do recommend leaving feedback in the format you have.
I’ve quit Hearthstone some time ago when they made it ‘battlepassey’. Realised ages ago what that would mean and I’m glad I was correct.
I didnt see you mention anything about retail, or did i miss something

They did.
But like “I unsubbed after 10 years is this is why” and not mentioning retail, and having anything WoW related be your 3rd most important point just felt intriguing.

Probably is because this is the most active forum so it is also a bit of a cry for help/attention.

That’s essentially what Renown levels are, minus the predatory business practices.
Only specifically within something like Plunderstorm, at most?
But not generally with how renown levels are 95% of the time.
Cool… cya back when you resub in a few months or when tww drops
So WoW SoD expected you to play with other people in a MMORPG. Like…were you hoping to somehow solo raids…what are you asking for here?
