One upsetting memory i have about the previous Blizzcon is Chris Metzen on stage selling the world soul saga as some grand battle of light versus darkness… it made me kind of disappointed because while i despise shadowlands i did appreciate the modern lore of none of these cosmic forces being inherently good them simply behaving in correlation to their cosmic force( demons for example simply embracing chaos)
It felt like a step back… oh yay were going to join the army of light and fight off the shadow.
This literally reflects back on the fantasy that wow classes/ specs being so generic.
recently I’ve been playing supervive the game had 2 healers generic cute animal creature that heals with yellow magic and young chipper wind child with upbeat attitude
Neither of these characters appeal to me, so in retrospect i never healed in that game.
They’ve recently released a character named Eva, she’s a dark seductress character that heals her allies by harming her enemies and it actually got me to finally try the healing role.
I actually love playing the character and healing on her is fun.
*So how does this reflect back to wow
Wow healer and tank fantasy’s are just as generic as Chris Metzen trying to sell us as warriors of light versus the darkness.
There’s no fantasy diversity to go against the grain or status quo
If you’re a healer then you’re a generic good guy that uses yellow or green to make people’s health go up.
If you’re a tank then you’re an angry edgy boy.
They have no
Dva(OW)
Moira(OW)
Lilia(LoL)
Gwen(LoL)
Eva(Supervive)
Loki(marvel rivals)
Necromancer or Nightblade healer (ESO)
sage (FFXIV)
Stukov(HotS)
Pyke(LoL)
the list goes on
Tl:DR; fantasy diversity promotes people to play in roles they typically wouldn’t because it appeals to a broader audience outside of the expected audience
Edit: marvel rival just announced Emma frost as a new tank who is considerably different from the rest of the tank roster who’s just a bunch of big meaty dudes and a robot
