So I got a bit bored and went on steam for a bit and noticed that Republic Commando was on there and had 0 idea that was on PC. I remember seeing it console way back when and always wanting it but you know being a kid at the time and little pocket money what could you do. I picked it up cheap on steam and started to play it and my lord this game aged well.
Why bring Blizzard into this? Many of you may recall the Shooter that was going to be for Starcraft be it the Ghost one or the project that involved maybe the Terran? Either or the footage that is available is on par with the graphics and quality you would see from Republic Commando or variants of the Halo games at that time.
Playing Republic Commando this gem of a game has great controls and though it’s “outdated” it handles very well and really focuses on the in game mechanic of the “fire squad/team (did a better job on this than Halo Reach lolz)” and got me thinking: Did Blizzard cheat themselves?
I think they did by not finishing the Starcraft FPS, as it stands sadly our RTS genre is “faltering” and I know many are fans of Starcraft (not a slight to the RTS gamers here because lord knows you love your SC2, WC3 etc etc) and play such games diligently.
On top of the work actually put into the game which in fact is wasted labor by standards now I think maybe later on down the road it should be something that is explored not only to add more to the story and lore of the Starcraft setting but to give those with that itchy trigger finger something they would really enjoy: be it Ghost or something else entirely.
Given the various projects at the moment and the turmoil the last year or so has caused I wouldnt expect hope anytime soon for something but I personally feel that by not finishing that project they cheated themselves out of a greater franchise they could have held on to just as strong as WoW.
