Blizzard Authenticator Changes

Seeing as the Authenticator is such a major issue. How come it isn’t showing up on the Battle Net Desktop app as an important news item.

I was only aware of it myself because I already had the battle net app on my phone for when I did actively chat and play with the guildies. I no longer use it now but I will have to remember not to uninstall it. It’s scary in case I forget.

However, I have not seen anything else mentioned on official channels regarding it. This concerns me as people that never needed the battle net app on their devices may then be locked out of their accounts through no fault of their own.

Blizzard - Can you please make ALL news regarding this change more visible to people, like a front page equivalent article on the desktop app. So they see it whenever they go to play a game. It will save you a lot of hassle later, having to resolve issues that may have been preventable.

You’re a few months late on this.

I know, I knew about it ages ago but I was expecting something more visible about it nearer the time and all I got was a pop up message on desktop app today, that I can’t even remember what it said and doesn’t come back again the next time I logged in … I wouldn’t count that as visible enough on the desktop app. It needs to be an active news article.

Thankfully I can see the authenticator app does let people know about it now ( which is visible enough for those that have it authenticate EVERY log in but not others who may never open it until it asks them to ) , but there is NO time frame on how soon is soon. What if they don’t do the switch before the authenticator app stops working ?

It’s those people I am worrying about.

The standalone authenticator app still works? I got a notice on my phone the last time I tried to use the standalone app to switch to the bnet mobile app. Once that was working I promptly uninstalled the old stand-alone app. It was pretty seamless. I’m sure there will be provisions for those that still have the old app after they pull the plug on it (like removing the authenticator per this EU Article).

THIS is from back in July 2023…

It was an active news article back in June 2023…

From what I understand no. Only the Battle.net Authenticator app works now.

So I made the right choice to be too lazy to install the authenticator ?

Wish they’d just switch to like, a passkey or whatnot, or let me use my Yubikey. I don’t like having countless different authenticator apps for specific products, I prefer things be a bit more unified.

I only found out about this after I built a new PC and went to use my physical authenticator and discovered the battery had died. Then I tried to use the app but it told me to use the Battle.net version. Luckily I was able to remove them and then attach the Battle.net version I guess?

they really want to get on our phones so they can spam us about their mobile games–no chance from me

you know they can already do that, right?

also, the app doesn’t do that.

What I would like to see is passkey support or allow us to use a 3rd party key generator like Microsoft Authenticator. I hate and have always hated having to have the Blizzard app installed for no other purpose than this.

So does the physical authenticator work or not now? I only seem to need to use that when I go into my bnet account but I noticed when I open the game a different security type of screen has been coming up for a few days now.

It appeared to still be working when my brother showed me on his authenticator app after skipping through the messages it went to the authenticator screen. It doesn’t work on mine as I migrated over as soon as I heard. He’s waiting until he has to switch over as he hates the battle.net app with a passion. I told him about it way back when I first heard so he could prepare … and reminded him again when the pop up on the desktop happened today. He has yet to see anything pop up regarding the change, except on the authenticator app today.

Thanks for those links. I never knew about those.

Ah, I never saw the June news article. Maybe it came and went off of the desktop app between my log in windows.

The July article I have never seen before now, I only go to the support site if I have a problem to resolve. The last time I looked on the support site was when I first saw mention of the change probably some time last year or the year before, to get dates and other info. Nothing additional was there if memory serves. And admittedly I forgot all about it until the pop up today because it was never on the screen reminding me when I opened up the desktop app.

Physical ones should still work, but their battery life is limited. It might be best to use the Battle.net app version before one day you go to press the physical one and nothing happens.

I don’t have a mobile phone so that isn’t going to work for me. But thanks anyway. It appears they set it up so that you can remove it temporarily so if the batteries goes I should be able to still access enough to get it removed.
