Hi guys I’m trying to aoe grind. Seems that mobs get chilled like a second after blizzard actually hits. And frost move breaks right after flame strike so I get assaulted quickly by mobs.
Is there a good resource teaching how to aoe grind. Talent build?
Damage has a chance to break frost nova…read the tooltip.
I’m not a mage…nor do I have much experience with them—but from what I have seen…most mages are just using Blizzard and then CoC. Arcane Explosion if needed at the end.
I think I have seen some opt out of getting the Frostbite talent too–in an effort to keep their AoE groups together and insuring that a few don’t get stuck…
That seems risky though IMO…it’s a great talent for almost any/every other situation.
The best thing to do is balance out your nova and your cone of cold cooldowns you cannot ever rely on your blizzard slowing them down. On private servers the slow is instantly applied and you might have seen it on some of these guides from the past… as others have said this is caused by spell batching so you definitely need to avoid that reliance.
Well if you do that you do big damage but you’d then have to weigh in did I do enough with those shatters to wipe the mob. If not I’d say hold off on burst and kite more with cone and blizzard sustain damage. Usually I’ll cone first then nova just for the cone damage alone and just use nova for spacing.
I don’t think you should Flame Strike at all. You don’t have a lot of +fire (a lot of your gear is probably +frost), you won’t be having them stay in that one area, it costs a lot of mana, and the direct component can break the nova.
Blizzard kiting and CoC to refresh slow is probably the way you want to do it. Nova → CoC is a lot of upfront damage, but you can get range and Blizzard slow them and whittle them down.
I use ice shield, gather mobs, frost Nova, blink out, turn, and blizzard just in front of them. As it finishes, I do it again, then COC, Nova again, strafe away, and blizzard one last time.
That is how a perfect pull goes. Of course 70% of the time I get resisted, have a pat, or somehow miss a blizzard slow effect and end up running around to reset.
You dont use flame strike on the initial frost nova, that will almost always break it.
Ice barrier, drink to full, mount. Gather everything into a clump and nova them. Then get to max range, “blink if you got dazed,” and turn and BLIZZARD. The nova will hold them there so they get slowed (3/3 improved blizzard) You should get 2 full blizzards out by the time they reach you, which will give you time for nova to come back off cooldown. Nova them, THEN flame strike>cone of cold.
This will kill 99% of mobs if you’re not outleveled, you can arcane explosion to finish off any survivors due to resists.
You never want use blink when aoe’ing unless you either get slowed or you have a boat load of mana, to create distance in a regular situation I will normally walk a couple steps forward then on my final step jump up and use forward momentum to carry me as I turn mid air and get off my blizzard. Saves wipes for me and is a good habit to start
Idk sometimes I’m on the very edge with my mana for zul/dm pulls so it seems critical in some cases to save you from death maybe not so much pulling Murloc and such
Ive been playing a frost mage and it is a good toon but I find it’s impossible to take more than 2 same as my level npcs on alone. Sometimes 3 but it’s a gamble. The idea that the move improved blizzard means you can own a group of npcs is not true.
I find improved blizzard though to be extremely useful is dealing with enemies in specific group situations or situations where your character could die in game. Slowing down a enemy 75% is why. For example, today I was in a group doing the warmongers quest in alterac area above southshore and saved the life of one of the group members with improved blizzard- slowing down the mobs chasing him by 75% allowing him to successfully flee. It was a warrior doing the “tanking” but our group lacked a healer. I also did this with myself on a group in arathi highlands area (courier quest, I escaped her guards). It can also be used sometimes in some instances to help with aoe needs.
Other than that I don’t find it to be a primary damage dealing spell. Maybe grouped up with other frost mages, but not in normal situations.
Make sure you put the effect just a bit in front of the group. When you go to cast your second blizzard back up a few feet and give yourself a bit more space.
Gather them up. Frost nova. Blink away. Blizzard, set the reticle so the far edge of it just catches the outer mob. That way they have to travel through the whole thing. As 3/3 imp blizzard they should reach the near edge of blizzard a second or so before the channel ends. Break channel and set up a new blizzard in the same way. By the time the channel ends theyll be close enough for cone of cold. Hit it, frost nova, jump/blink away and one last blizzard should be enough.
Remember to keep elixirs of fortitude, troll’s blood, and defense active. Maybe scrolls of stamina as well.
I see most players going straight into Blizzard from Frost Nova and not worrying about Flame Strike to be honest. Using CoC and Arcane Explosion to kite out for extra damage needed.
I can’t really see too much value in Flame Strike, killing mobs slightly quicker doesn’t really feel like it would have that much benefit over the reliability and safety of Arcane Explosion, Blizzard, and CoC.
gather your mobs, freeze the group, run to max range and blizzard until they get into CoC range, use CoC to kite them untill nova comes off of cd a few seconds later, rinse repeat untill dead. becomes ALOT easier once you get mount and ice barrier
Ice barrier, mount round up mobs nova run away, blizzard once or twice if you got the space, coc maybe blink if you got enough mana, blizzard, nova when up get distance blizzard.
