Blizzard and Linux

We all know Linux, and mainly Ubuntu distribution . It’s not as big as Windows but there’s a growing number of people that are using Linux distributions; actually there’s a stem project aiming to get Linux compatibility to all their games.

My question is if there has ever been an official comunication or just a hint that someday battle net will have full Linux compatibility. Yeah I know with wine you can run it, but it’s not the same that’s why most part of Linux gamers have dual boot with windows for gaming and their preffered distribution for working. It would be awesome for blizzard to be “pioneers” in open source distribution gaming (the quote meaning there are companies already doing this but it’s not as common).

Or maybe its just me that this dream of having only Ubuntu and avoiding dual booting! What are your opinions?

Chance of it happening is slim to none.
Been asked 1000s of times by 5 people over the years.
Those that want to play WoW and use Linux are doing that. Adding Linux support will not gain subs so there is no reason to do it.

Linux was kinda unofficially supported in vanilla beta as there was a bunch of folks on the dev team that were fans of the OS and found it fun that people could get it running under Wine.

They’re not going to make it compatible officially though. Think the reason they gave was that there’s too many variables in a Linux install that they can’t account for. With a windows and Mac install, things are more predictable. Especially since there’s multiple distributions, not everyone is running the same one, and no one is going to want to be told there’s only certain ones that it’ll run under.

I’m with you 100%, but, there isn’t enough reason for them to spend time on supporting Linux. Linux isn’t as popular as Windblows. Maybe, just maybe when folks get sick and tired of FORCED updates, data loss, BSOD, etc they will convert to Linux and then and only then would I think Blizz would consider supporting it.

I myself run nothing but Linux. No dual boot, just Linux. And as you know we have Wine and all the goodies to make WOW work. My performance IS just as good.

But, to answer your question: Not going to happen.

That’s a pity. I truly believe that Linux will get more popular, and the fact that steam proton is on beta test already and covered 1/3 of every game on its library proves it. Wine is awesome, yes but it’s not the same. I never could get the same performance with wine sadly.

And the problem of different distributions isn’t thaaat hard, I mean most of them are based on debian.

It’d be awesome for blizz to consider it but I can understand it’s not priority since not many people are using it😪.

Problem #1 , Problem #2 is that those that use Linux and want to play WoW are using WINE or dual boot to do so , those using Linux that want to play WoW and are not is tiny amount of people (likely less than 100)

Forced updates? Don’t use home version. BSOD? That’s a you problem. Fix your stuff and this won’t happen. Data loss? Keep your stuff backed up.

All 3 of these complaints are solved by the end user. Make sure your hardware is compatible with each other. Keep your data backed up and don’t use home edition.

Not gonna happen. Ever.

Been using home edition since beta and it has never had issues with forced updates (there are settings still in home to help with this), haven’t had a BSOD since XP (ME, 7 and 10 all have been stable for me)

Will it get more popular? Probably a bit.

Will it get so popular that it’s ever considered something to really consider in the gaming world? Probably not.

At the end of the day, Windows comes built-in. No one has to do anything to get Windows working. It’s consumer-friendly. Linux is for the very tech-minded. It’ll never be anything but a niche group when talking about mainstream gaming.

There use to be a Linux client wayyyy long ago, I actually used it. But they abandoned it :frowning:

There was a very short time they had it for download on the official site. Right at the end of Beta and just after retail opened.

Whoa whoa lil fella…Yeah, forced updates. Period. I did fix my problem. I don’t run Windblows.

If you can’t stop forced updates in Windows 10 (any version) then you should not be using Linux as there is way more complex configurations you may need there.

Home is still forced to update at certain points/updates. Pro is never forced to update.

Even if you set your internet as a metered connection home will force an update if Microsoft deems it necessary.

Dude, Linux is simple. And like I said, I don’t run Windows, haven’t in years. Last time I had Windows there was no way to disable updates.

And, if Windows wants to force you to update they will do so.

Linux updates when YOU want.

Pafierra of course it won’t be as popular as windows, but it’s not just my opinion that Linux users are growing in number, is a fact. Again, the easiest example is steam proton project, there’s no way they will do that massive work if the number of gamers asking for a windows alternative hasn’t grown.

Nope.

I deleted my Vista/Windows partition with the Burning Crusade Expansion; Been only in Linux since.

OpenSuse 15 here, wine-staging and having to select the Dx 11 legacy driver in game.

I’ve been playing Wow all that time, in Linux.

I just use the stock wine, then switched to wine-staging when needed (as with the Legion “updates”, as well as now.)

Linux is super simple now. OpenSuse makes it so easy, as does Ubuntu/whatever I suppose. This isn’t your Daddy’s Linux. It is actually easier/more stable than windows.

The best part is reading the tech support forums, of the crazy problems people have with the native OS after some patches and I’m just merrily playing in Linux.

Apart from Wow, on my computer under Linux, I mainly game now on my Xbox one. It just works for gaming, with no headache or mandatory computer upgrades.

It is, has been for some time.

I’m just making fun dude. I hear nothing but good things about it.

I have just been hearing “nothing but good things” for 20 years now so the conversation seemed like Deja Vu

When will it become mainstream?
