I used the word, I know what it means.
#Kony2012 Right!?
I met (ethnic) Chinese who were well glad to have been from Hong Kong or Taiwan.
And others from PRC who took a while to acclimatize.
It’s a tricky situation.
well if your primary audience is composed of a bunch of freedom loving people, expecting them to support you overly punishing a player on a global stage for voicing their opinion on a political topic, is nonsensical.
Yeah… but you really don’t. Google it, “Hacktivist” has no relation to anyone here complaining about Blizzard/HK.
Better yet since I doubt you’ll google, here’s Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacktivism
Yours is a very good point, Silver. But millions of Chinese apparently also watched the event.
Also, as I have noted elsewhere, legally Blizzard’s hands may have been tied.
Personally, I would have disqualified the guy, taken his winnings and banned him for life.
Not for saying what he said.
But for using my private event to grandstand.
Don’t play semantics with me, I am no child, I’m sure you understood the context that I used it in. I will no longer waste finger skin replying to you.
I mean you were the one here only replying to the part where I corrected you, but hey you do you my guy.
Hopefully you learned something at least.
i would’ve taken the stream down, reminded him of the rules, and removed him from competition but let him keep his winnings and titles. punishing him financially for supporting freedom… not a good plan.
He wasn’t punished financially for supporting freedom.
He was punished for breaking the rules and attempting to subvert a non political event. On foreign soil, the rules of “free speech” and “freedom” are a bit different.
fact is, he was supporting freedom. the punishment didnt fit the crime. oh how awful, he wants hong kong to retain their freedom. oh my oh my whatever shall we do. so terrible. /smirk
hehe
punishment didnt fit the crime.
The “crime” was an inappropriate opportunistic political hijaking of a non political event. It’s not the substance of what he said. It’s that it was political speechmaking which is not appropriate at a game competition. Disruptive behavior like that should be punished. He could have donned a MAGA hat, for example and extolled the virtues of Trump. Would have met the same penalties.
That’s not true though. They’ve already proven they don’t enforce the rule evenly, as an American team held up a “Free Hong Kong, boycott Blizz” sign and were not even remotely punished.
I mentioned this in another thread, but Ill post it here. I get the sentiment of keeping politics out of games, but surely one can see the irony in the situation. Blizzard’s (and other companies like it) policy on inclusivity is entirely at odds with the sentiment behind the protests.
Regardless of where one stands and of the actual issue, Blizzard is being incongruent on their part. It seems odd to champion diversity and community and then take a heavy handed stance on the matter. The best they could do is just avoid the issue entirely.
Posted earlier, one event took place on American soil, the other didn’t and not every place on earth has the same “free speech” rules. See earlier discussion on obligations when dealing with China in business.
So either it was because of China, or it was because of the rule.
Either way, the rule is now irrelevant.
Actually not mutually exclusive. Could have been both.
Blizzard are remaining silent on the issue. Wise choice. It’s what I would do in the same situation. Just keep quiet for a few months and come back again when the entire thing has blown over.
only if china didnt like it. hahaha. oh gosh. /tears of laughter
well he’d have been punished but not likely to the degree he was. you’ve seen the other team that put up a poster that said freedom for hong kong and boycott blizzard, right? blizz said they werent gonna punish them. which opened a whole new can of worms.
weeks, more likely… judging from the pretty slow traffic on this thread, could be mere days.
Blizzard may not have liked it. My point is, any similar misconduct could have met the same fate. As far as I’m concerned, politics just doesn’t belong at events like that. I think this nolife jerk really put Blizzard in the soup.
Did I say I would have banned him for life? Also would have sent him to bed without supper.
I guess I’m just cranky. I am sick to death of politics politics politics. It has infested every aspect of life. When I pay to enjoy a non political event the last effin thing I want is for it to be turned into a political soapbox. Just my personal revulsion.
