No one is arguing the rights of a corporation, they’re arguing the ethics of siding with an authoritarian communist regime and the associated financial gain at the expense of the basic human rights of Hong Kong citizens.
If the basis of your argument is whether an action is permitted by US law, then China’s harvesting of human organs is perfectly ethical since it is outside of US jurisdiction.
It also means that slavery is morally tenable so long as no law prohibits it, which was the case here for a long time.
Even on the basis of rights, we are perfectly reasonable in boycotting Blizzard and doing everything we can to make them fail as a company.
Your defending the tenability of the rights of corporations is because Blizzard’s actions are morally untenable when it comes to Hong Kong. You picked the easier of the two arguments. It’s very shallow.
Funny, I haven’t seen people banned for criticizing China. People have made multiple posts over several days saying China is the sum of human brutality, and yet they’re still around.
And where from the facts (not the hyperbole that has come since then) is this remotely the situation ?
Show me where someone came out supporting China and had no action taken against him at a major tournament with the same rules in place and then you would have a point.
Already seeing that. If you aren’t against Trump you aren’t part of their “cool kids” circle where its basically an echo chamber of nonsense. I’ve seen countless women on Tinder saying “If you support Trump don’t message me” and things of that nature, imagine if the reverse had been said about Obama. Imagine the backlash and cries of racism, but its perfectly fine to assault and demonize Trump supporters right?
Seeing the same thing up here in Canada with Sheer and before that Kenney here in Alberta. Honestly have whatever political view you like, if I like you we will be friends (even if you don’t want to … wow nice new curtains)
No, my argument is that a philosophy of “It’s perfectly okay to interfere with the ability of private organizations to determine their own workings with regard to membership and resources so long as we think those private organizations are wrong” leads to bad places very, very quickly.
Blizzard wants to stay out of politics. Somebody abused their platform, and now Blizzard is stuck in a PR mess they didn’t ask for and don’t want. Unless they want to have a similar political mess every time they hold any sort of e-sport event (and eventually lose the ability to hold them at all), they have to curb that behavior – and if a signed contract isn’t strong enough, then stronger measures are called for.
You will get mass reported if you post “I stand with China” too.
So don’t come here with your self-righteousness, trying to get a rise out of someone else. I think enough people on this post has agreed that this is a game forum, not CNN or FOX forum.
Nobody is denying that. Nobody is saying that they don’t support Hong Kong.
The player (based on what is facts) was not banned because he made a political statement critical of China or supporting Hong Kong. He was banned due to a political statement after agreeing not to do so.
People saying this has anything to do with Hong Kong or is because of Chinese influence are taking the truth and turning it into taffy so they can stretch it.
Because this is a forum about world of Warcraft not about China or Hong Kong, they have their own forums I’m sure go and take yourself and let them know you are pissed at blizzard for not backing Hong Kong
^^ this. Also the player in question was playing Hearthstone, yes made by same company but completely different game and genre which has it’s own forums.
1000 page thread on the community forum for you to go and spread your outrage.
If blizzard didn’t want to insert itself into politics of a region, they should have done nothing in regards to what the statement was, but instead give a warning and reminder of their position instead of making a point to remove or punish someone who took a side.
In acting punitively, whether intended or not, they ended up picking a side in a fight they wanted nothing to do with.
Blizzard has to be the biggest group of imbeciles I’ve ever seen, who the hell thought seizing a prize pool and removing someone from a tournament would somehow end well. This is 2019 news spreads like wild fire especially if it has anything to do with greedy corporations or politics this happens to be both so to somehow let this happen is astonishing
The thing is, Blizzard and affiliates have these rules in place SPECIFICALLY to avoid the drama that goes with political opinions. As you can see, it can be a lose/lose situation and they know it, so they try to avoid it entirely (as do an extremely large percentage of mid to large corporations, world wide) by putting these rules in place BEFOREHAND .
You can never make EVERYONE happy and the more you try, the more the opposite effect occurs. As we all can see here. Which is why Blizzard has the rule in the first place.
The quid pro quo of this situation with Blizzard is that they need China more than China needs Blizzard. Blizzard knows this and China knows this. Those of you that say that Blizzard has Chinese masters are not incorrect in this regard. It is what it is and even if Blizzard were to give China the middle finger, it would have ZERO impact on any of this other than Blizzard possibly going belly up because they are trying to appease a bunch of armchair activists voicing their opinions.
Hey I get it…people care about this. I do too. But let’s be honest shall we? How many of you are willing to go to Hong Kong and protest in the streets with the people of Hong Kong? Why aren’t you there already? It’s been going on for 6 months now and only NOW you care?
