Blizz, Hong Kong, Freedom of speech, lets have an Adult discussion

But…But the rules! Don’t you understand that a minor infraction deserves a massive and over the top overreaction?

Freedom of speech =/= Freedom of insults.

Freedom of speech can get twisted.

Concise accurate assessment.
People just want some banner to wave around because they’re angry and don’t know why, but they have nothing to pin it on so yeah…“asian gamer dude!”

Just because you agree with one and not the other does not make either less an example of political discourse. You ban them all, or ban none.

No, we were talking about why Blizzard can’t simply pick and choose which causes they ban someone for. Just because Free Hong Kong is more popular than ISIS doesn’t mean one gets a pass while the other doesn’t. If you allow one, you have to allow both, or you get sued, and they’ll have an extremely good case against you.

Freedom of speech means the government can’t arrest you for saying mean things about them. It doesn’t mean that private companies can’t ban you for trying to use them as a platform for your politics, especially when the venue is not a political one.

You divine this because i comment on the forums about Blizzard? This goes for everyone? God you have some omnipotent powers to know what everyones doing in their own time.

So then a change in punishment is probably what most people are looking to. Still not able to find a list of banned players for anything related to politics. This whole issue is what is trending literally everywhere so getting through that is a pain. Yknow, unless this is the first time it’s happened with Hearthstone at Grandmaster level. I honestly wonder what would’ve happened if he was just DQ’d and kept the money, or DQ’d for a shorter time.

On a note, I like this in the article which is what I’ve been arguing with others on.

But when I am on the desk for an official Hearthstone broadcast, I leave those views at home. Maybe I’ll make a subtle snide remark on occasion, but I know that I am representing Blizzard in addition to myself. If I were to close a show with speech about how I feel like Trump should be impeached, I wouldn’t expect to be invited back for future events.

They know full well there is a time and a place for everything.

I guess Blizzard didn’t regard this conduct as a “minor infraction” but a breach of a material term of the ToS.

Apparently Custom Ink is making Hong Kong T Shirts and the proceeds go to Hong Kong.

You can watch #boycottblizzard for follow-throughs on twitter. There has been enough of them for them having “problems” with their systems when deleting a bnet account. Don’t try at desinformation again.

I can appreciate rules are rules but blizzard had a multitude of ways to handle this an they chose the worst one. And now, i get to enjoy watching them burn in their own bed. I really really hope it hurts.

I wouldnt say they chose the worst one, the people made it look like the worst one.

Just as freedom of speech doesn’t apply to a white supremacist getting tossed out of Berkeley, it doesn’t apply to a Hong Kong protester getting tossed out of a gaming tournament. Whether you like their message or not is irrelevant, save for the optics.

I’d be satisfied with an official statement saying they support human rights and that while they appreciate the current political climate and the struggles of HK they must follow the rules. That would put them in my good graces cus that shows they are willing to risk money from China being lost. Yet they still get to keep their rule integrity so many idiots are trying to use as a talking point.

It’s literally the worst one. You coulda just suspended him for a few months from competitve play, let him keep the money and i dont even know why the casters were burned. So stupid.

Im completely immoral and complacent. I dont give a crap about china or its problems.
So can I have all your stuff, those of you who are quitting?

Oh, child. They didn’t get close to the worst one. There’s plenty worse they could have done, if they were feeling truly vindictive.

It’s probably too late for simply a change of punishment to fix things, but yeah, if Blizzard hadn’t have overreacted, this wouldn’t be a big deal.

A couple match suspension, a fine, bans from post-win interviews. These would all be reasonable and appropriate punishments.

A 12 month DQ and stripping him of all his winnings is not a reasonable and appropriate punishment.

And that’s why they have an international crapstorm on their hands.

About the casters, read my prev post.

uh, no, they said the rules called for a ban and taking his prize.
They did that. They didnt send out a hit squad.
Hyperbole isnt your friend.

People would had flipped out as well, because its Hong Kong.

The caster got burned for not doing their job. You can see that they knew it was coming and did nothing to prevent it.
