Ever notice how many difference variety of cat pets we get (even an achievement) but only really have a corgi and mastiff dog pet?

Because cats are just a different texture. That makes them easy.
Dogs look different, a corgi model, as mastiff model, etc.

we have pugs, corgis and mastiffs (and an untameable/non battle pet dog owned by some elf dude)
it’s just easier to recolour the same old cat model over and over, we now have a fat and shaggy cat which makes 3 cats and 3 dogs (if you exclude big cat cubs)
I agree we need more dogs though… big dogs not the toy breeds

Only slightly related, but this reminded me:
In Heroes of the Storm, Genn Graymane is one of the playable characters. Like all characters, he has a variety of skins, some of which are themed with other characters. One such set places characters in the role of a sort of future-police SWAT team. In it, Graymane’s human form looks like your typical action hero cop, but his worgen form is, you guessed it, a were-German-Shepard. And it looks awesome, it really does.

Um… what? You can get a Dog for your farm in Pandaria, who follows you to your Garrison, and actually can follow you to Dalaran. Barks when you click on it, responds to emotes, runs around like a spazz.
You can get a cat for your farm, too… but she just walks around, no emote response. Doesn’t follow your anywhere.
Also it took them 7 expansions just to put /meow into the game. /bark was already in by default. Really, dude.
