Blade Runner 2049 should have done as good as Dune at the box office

For those who don’t know, same director for both movies.

Dune is doing really well for a Covid era blockbuster, and it is getting an official sequel. I still have yet to see it as I am not a fan of the source material, yet.

Anyway: Rewatching both Blade Runner films (My favorite sci-fi film) I have to say for a sequel 30 years later or w/e…it is incredible, it deserved more attention. I think its rating and it being too mature for the majority of movie goers hurt it. Same with the first one. Great story telling with phenomnial story telling. Also its Ford best back to the old role films he has made (SW/Indiana Jones weren’t nearly as good for long awaited sequels).

Technically it’s a “part 2”, not really a “sequel”

in hollywood part 2 is a sequel lol.

Yeah, no.

Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2 are not a main story and a sequel. It’s a two part movie that was too long. The new Dune movie is the same way. The director felt it couldn’t be told in a single movie (and is absolutely right about that). That’s part of the reason the 1984 version was a bit of a failure. The story was too long and they tried to cram it all into a 2 hour or less movie.

Deathly Hallows is a sequel to Half Blood Prince. Deathly Hallows 2 is NOT a sequel to part 1.

you clearly don’t know journalism in hollywood. 99% of the time part 1 part 2,etc,etc gets reffered to as sequel, plain and simple. Is it correct? No. Is it Journalism? Yes. Also an exec would say the same.

Also this is way off topic. As the main point of the thread is I thought BR 2049 should have done as well as Dune is. So I won’t comment on Part 2 being a sequel or not, anymore. Cheers!

Not when the movie was already divided into two parts they wouldn’t.

The new Dune movie was already slated to be two movies. The second part was only going to be done if the first part did well though (not like Peter Jackson filming a bunch of stuff all at once for LOTR).

Literally not a sequel.

Now, if “journalists” in Hollywood want to stupidly use the term “sequel” then they just show how stupid they are and have no business writing about such things.

There is a distinct difference in a two part movie and an actual “sequel”. Any “journalist” that doesn’t know the difference, needs to find a new career.

Very true. Tho as I said I won’t reply anymore. Tho I did want to say you are correct. Sadly 99% of “journalists” on Deadline, Hollywood Reporter, etc, etc who say they are gods work do this crap whether we argue till dooms day. Last point: It doesn’t matter.

Right. Unlike Deathly Hallows movies, and LOTR movies, Dune two was not filmed with Dune one. That means it can’t be considered a two part movie if the 2nd hasn’t even been filmed before the 1st was released. So, technically it will be sequel.

Dune Part 2 is not a sequel.

Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune will be sequels.

I think Villeneuve stated that he plans to finish the movies in 2 parts. He has no intention to continue the saga with the Paul’s kid growing up to be a worm. That would be a hard pill for most people to swallow.

Meh, I’d watch it.
