Blackscreen since mini-patch following 8.1

Since the mini patch after 8.1 when I log in my screen either goes completely black or flashes black and will sometimes require a hard system restart to recover. I’ve had a ticket open since friday, and you can see some of the things that have been tried to solve this problem as discussed in another thread here Black screen after launcher update - #18 by Ibaraius

All of my drivers are up to date, but I think i may have narrowed down the problem, My Win.10 is version 1803 and I believe I’m blocked from updating it further (I spent half the night trying to force the download despite everything bad I’ve read about 1809, It won’t install on my system). I’m not tech savy, but a quick google search tells me that there are all kinda of problems still being worked out with it, and that not all users have access to it. Is there any possible way to get around the black screen without the Windows 10 1809 update aside from staying in compatibility mode for Win 8? Or am I just stuck in limbo now?

I’d gladly supply any more info needed to get this resolved, but it seems the best answer I’ve managed so far is to use an update that doesn’t exist for me, and if that doesn’t help, too bad. Only WoW is being affected, so if there’s no solution I guess the only answer left will be to let my sub run out and consider coming back when this gets sorted. I’m sad I was only half way through the time I paid for and I’ve already wasted 2 days trying to fix this…

Will want to get a DxDiag report. This issue in many cases has been either an outdated version of Windows 10 or outdated drivers. We’ll want that to look into both of those potential causes.

For troubleshooting you may want to try setting the game to DirectX 11. To do so, go into the Blizzard app settings. From there go to Game Settings and check “Additional command line arguments” for World of Warcraft. In the text box that appears enter “-D3D11” without quotes and hit Done.

Great, I can’t figure out how to post that here, but i’ve sent 2 of those in tickets, one is open and waiting for a reply from 14 hours ago right now, so if there’s a way for me to post it here let me know, but if not maybe you can access the one I sent with my ticket last night?

I did BLATANTLY explain that my windows is out of date, but that the newest version is still blocked to some users, myself included, so I’m running the most up to date version possible on my machine, 1803 not 1809.

Yes I did see that you mentioned that you’re not getting the Windows Update. I was merely making a statement that outdated Windows has been a potential cause, not that it is specifically your issue in this situation.

Now with that said I did find your ticket and both the Nvidia and Intel drivers look to be out of date. Would recommend grabbing the updated drivers from the links below:

Nvidia: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/141171/en-us
Intel: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27360/Graphics-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-15-45-?product=88355

If you run into issues installing the Intel drivers, you may need to go through the steps here for a manual installation through device manager.

If there’s still issues, let’s try setting the game to DirectX 11. To do so, go into the Blizzard app settings. From there go to Game Settings and check “Additional Command Line Arguments” for WoW. Enter “-D3D11” without quotes in the text box that appears and hit Done.

I’ve updated both of those since my original ticket. last night I re-opened the ticket with a new report attached, not sure why it’s still saying they’re out of date unless you are looking at the first report I sent because they are definitely up to date now.

I’m currently able to run the game in windows compatibility mode, I’m sure it does have at least a little to do with directx12 despite my graphics card being compatible, but what happens when I change that line and get no further assistance cause I keep getting left with no help and I don’t know how to undo those changes when you abandon me too. So then I’ll be stuck in directx11 forever and we can pretend it’s fixed? I’m really not comfortable making changes I don’t know how to revert.

We haven’t abandoned you at all. In fact one of your tickets has a response on it and if you’re still having issues you’d just need to re-open the ticket. The other ticket is still less than 24 hours old. While we try to get to these as quickly as possible, keep in mind that we did just have a big patch come out and so wait times can be a bit longer.

As far as reverting the change I had mentioned, all you would need to do is delete the -D3D11 line or uncheck “Additional Command Line Arguments”.

If you continue to have issues though, this would be best taken care of through the tickets you already have. If you’re concerned about not getting a response, there’s also the option of putting in a webchat or callback ticket so that you can talk to someone regarding your issue and troubleshoot live with that game master.

I did re-open the ticket. It’s showing as open on my end, but I have not received a response and from what you’re telling me I can’t even tell if it’s showing up on your end at all. I’ve been trying to resolve this issue since friday, it’s sunday. I understand there are a lot of issues with the patch and you’re all very busy. I guess it was silly of me, a paying customer, to expect that the time I’ve already paid to use has any value. Thank you for your help.

considering you are currently still playing the game, i’m not sure why you think your paid time is being ignored.

as well, It’s been 2 days of you trying to resolve the issue, and you’ve already gotten a response to a ticket, and had 3 blue responses despite you being hostile in response to that help. there are other ticketing options that result in immediate responses - live chat and phone callback - that you are choosing not to use. martyr much.
