Blackfathom Deeps Doesn't Make Sense

With the updated version of BFD, it doesn’t make sense when The Old Gods speak out telling Aku’mai to rise. Blizzard said the only Old God that is still alive is N’zoth, but at this time when they released it, N’zoth was locked up, plus it isn’t his voice at all. There is no other Old God alive to be speaking like that either. It just doesn’t make any sense at all.

Am I missing something?

You’re missing the fact that Technical Support is the wrong forum for dungeon lore discussions.

Dungeons, Raids, and Scenarios would be much more appropriate.

Editing to add: maybe a friendly Forum Moderator will move it so it can get a good discussin’.

Weird, I had the story page open when I made this.

(Speculative): Xal’atath? N’Zoth was directly active in Cataclysm, so I think he would’ve been the primary force behind this.

To date we’ve yet to find out just what lies under northwestern Kalimdor. The Cataclysm-era leveling quests show that something massive and Old God-spawned is sprawled underneath that part of the continent, and the geographical layout of the Black Empire suggests whatever it is probably came from either C’thun or Y’shaarj (or is perhaps a literal piece of one of them), but its specific nature remains unknown.

As for those whispers in particular, we found out in Legion that even with Yogg-saron “dead,” some measure of his presence seemingly lingers enough to stir local faceless minions to action in Ulduar, so the whispers in Blackfathom Deeps may well be some trace leftovers of the defeated Old Gods still influencing their minions in that part of the world.

Blackfathom Deeps is admittedly a weirdly “blunt” situation, with the game outright identifying the Old Gods in their whisper emotes instead of referring to them as “mysterious whispers” or something. Throughout the expansion there’s otherwise a tendency for the writers to play it coy about the Old Gods themselves, but here the emote text straight-up names them. It’s one of only a few places in Cataclysm where the Old Gods are directly and explicitly identified to the player in a meta sense; everywhere else the narrative is so focused on Deathwing or the Elemental Lords that the story constantly skirts just short of overtly attributing things to the Old Gods, despite the obvious symptoms of faceless ones and Twilight’s Hammer cultists running around.

Well … BFD is close to the ill begotten Tree that would be named Teldrassil, which an Old God servant named Fandral had planted against Malfurion’s commands.

I would not be surprised if that Old God tree and the Old God whispers were connected. BFD is close by.

Well, we already know Teldrassil was specifically corrupted via a transplanted branch from Xavius that Fandral grafted to it. A branch that came from Xavius’ tree-formed prison, which was at the time located in Azshara. Otherwise it was just a really massive tree; there wasn’t anything sinister about the method of its initial creation, just the questionable intent and subsequent deliberate corruption.

The thing under Darkshore, Ashenvale and Stonetalon comes across as separate. Like something left over from the Black Empire that woke up during the Cataclysm and started sprouting tentacles and corrupting things in certain parts of the zones. And we already know Blackfathom Deeps well predates Teldrassil, given that it was an old Temple of Elune from back before the Sundering.

Do you mean at the Master’s Glaive?

Nope. I’m referring to the swarms of tentacles erupting from the earth at Lake Falathim in Ashenvale and at Stonetalon Peak. Both faceless Harbingers Aphotic and Aph’lass at those locations speak of “IT which rises,” but nothing much seemed to come of it once the player killed them.

Nonetheless, there seemed to be something underground in southwestern Ashenvale and northwestern Stonetalon that was spawning all those tentacles to invade the zones amidst the chaos of the Cataclysm, until the player’s intervention presumably halted it.

Could have been “servants” like following ones, just not successfully summoned:

The corruption of Teldrassil was something that was completely purged as of the cataclysm era anyways. I do not know why people always bring it up. It had nothing to do really with the thing under Stonetalon peak.

If I had to take a guess what is under there is probably a particularly large Forgotten One that was locked up, like Iso’rath. In any event it never did break free so with all the old Gods dead it likely went fully back into dormancy.

That doesn’t stop him from speaking to people.

They probably hadn’t decided on his official VA yet back then.

Heh, Shuma Gorath…

Wasn’t BFD updated in MoP though?

I believe that was done in Cata. The ones revamped in MoP were Scarlet Monestary and Scholo.

Oddly enough, it was updated with Warlords of Draenor, not Cataclysm or Mists of Pandaria.

You’re right

It couldn’t have been a servant since it says “The Old Gods” for whos speaking.

As for the person saying it could’ve been N’zoth before they picked a voice actor for him, it still doesn’t exactly answer this because it refers to it as multiple Old Gods saying it, not just one.
