Black Screen when game boots

I was having the same issue with launching to a black screen and restarting the client several times before it would come up. As long as I did not touch anything in the graphics settings, the game seemed fine, otherwise, if I changed anything, it would drop to less than 1 fps and I was back at square 1.

I tried forcing the game to update/repair, that didn’t work. reinstalled, that didn’t work either.

Anyway, after someone mentioned Discord, I closed my Discord client and suddenly, it’s like there was never anything wrong, game works fine now - I’m assuming it must have something to do with Discords in game overlay, may need to check for an update to Discord.

I had to close discord. And then changed to direct x 11. It’s working so… weird but w/e.

I have the exact same issue when the game boots I see the little hand but nothing else. I made sure everything else was up to date and ever did a scan and repair on my wow files and its still happening.

Love whoever said to change to Direct 11. Thank you very much. If you are having the black screen issue, find the like to the direct 11 change and do the battle.net way.

I turned off my discord
Black screen went away and I am in as well.

Can confirm that switching to DX11 fixed the issue for me as well. Used the Game Settings command prompt method in the Bnet launcher.

The game is giving me a black loading screen as well. I have done all of the troubleshooting steps provided and still cannot play the game.

Hoping Blizzard has a resolution for this in near future as it appears to be related to the patch that dropped today.

Edit: I have to change it back and forth from DX11 and DX12 each time I go to play the game.

I was having this issue too but I’m still unsure what caused it. It was fine after I let Windows update run, though.

Thank you, everyone! I wanted to poke in here to let you know that we’re aware of the Discord Overlay Hook causing Black Screens and Crashing currently. We are also seeing this with Rivatuner as well and tracking both of these issues.

Edit: Razer Chroma SDK has been reported to cause Black Screen issues as well. If this is currently on the system, please try the steps available on the Overwatch thread here.

Currently, the work arounds have been to switch to disable or uninstall temporarily the applications. Discord overlay can be disabled under Setting > Overlay on the Discord app. Switching to DirectX11 has currently been working around these crashes as well!

Open the Blizzard Application.
Under the World of WarCraft tab, go to Options > Game Settings .
Check Additional Command Line Arguments .
Type in: -d3d11

Click done and retest World of WarCraft.

I have a fresh game and bnet install on a freshly updated computer, don’t even have Discord installed yet, and have had the Black Screen of Death. I’ve followed every single suggested fix thus far to resolve the issue and nothing has worked. It seems that those of us with integrated graphics - no matter how powerful or new - cannot support the current game format. I can understand how downgrading your OS from the resource sucking abomination that is Windows 10 to Win7 or Win8 could help … but not rolling back DirectX to a version from years ago.

Blizzard just broke the game. Again. BfA = Blizzard’s effing Broken
