if i wanted to play a character who runs around killing things with a big sword (like cloud strife from ff7, Ike from fire emblem, inuyasha from inuyasha, that guts guy from berzerk) what class would be a better choice, arms warrior, or ret paladin? both can wield two handed weapons, i’m just wondering which would feel better to kill mobs as.

Arms Warrior, or if you want to swing two big swords Fury Warrior.
Paladin and Death Knight can also kind of fill this role, but Warrior’s are just all muscle and technique and no magic.

If Arms had the 2h Frost Obliterate animation, it would be the perfect fit for what you described. But alas, I think you have to go Venthyr to get access to that animation.

Why would they not like it? Humans and Elves don’t look too different bodywise, just that Humans are a bit fat, but arms go near the same. 
most elves are portrayed as two types in other franchises.
the barely known guy whose nice to folks and just treats said elf as if they were a normal human.
or the guy who brags to his enemies, friends, lovers, or anyone, that they are better than you in everyway, even tho they are just as terrible.
