Big Sur has arrived

macOS Big Sur is now live. Are we safe to upgrade? Anyone care to share their WoW experiences with the Big Sur beta?

I’m also very curious about this, specifically, if Apple did anything with the display driver to fix the issue with Intel GPU’s that were introduced in 8.3.

I’m also nervous to upgrade to Big Sur until I get a definite yes or no on this. Don’t want to upgrade and not be able to play WoW

I upgraded today and so far, things are running really well, including World of Warcraft. No issues in-game at all and running smooth!

I cannot speak to the Intel GPU issue since I’m using a Radeon Pro dedicated GPU and am unfamiliar with the issue.

I updated today and there was a significant frame drop after 3 min or so in game. FPS seems normal when your character stands still but it drops heavily when you move around. Usually, this won’t happen unless the CPU gets too hot, but this time it seems my CPU temp looks normal (65-70 C).

I would suggest do not update unless you are confident with your mac.

PS: I’m using 16 inch Macbook Pro with Radeon 5300M

I’ve updated on both an iMac 2015 and my 16" MBP w/5300 and both are working and playing WoW just as they were before the update. No problems at all.

Installed Big Sur on separate partition on 2018 MBP 15" with Vega 20. WoW runs fine. I played normally as I would for about 5h, doing ICC rares, dailies, running some old raids for xmog.

Just remember that any time you do a major update, possibly for several hours after an update that the cpu might be busy with tasks like spotlight indexing and time machine backup tasks running. Or non compatible 3rd party software running amuck. make sure WoW’s performance isn’t hindered by these things post update

I just did my first play since installing Big Sur this morning. I get lag every few seconds like a stutter. My FPS is about the same just get it while moving. Thanks Omegal for the reminder that this may be temporary. I’ve restarted a second time to just let things settle. I play on 16" MBP i9 and WoW has been great for a while now. I really hope it calms itself down. Bad enough I had to find a workaround for my Naga mouse side buttons since synapse also died on this update.

I think this often gets overlooked. Lots of Mac users have as many or more third-party menubar apps and such installed as they do WoW addons, and with each the chances that something is acting up increases. You’ve also got notorious bad-behavers like Adobe and Dropbox that litter files and daemons everywhere…

Just tried Shadowlands beta this morning. I also got extremely bad stutter in beta client, so bad that the game is unplayable, but this does not happen on retail.

This is what I would like to know as well. Currently have to play via boot camp and don’t have the HDD space to test it under MacOS without moving WoW from one to the other which I don’t want to do if it’ll be for nothing.

I have Adobe Creative Cloud running all the time. Would it help if I closed it when playing WoW? I am just curious how Adobe would effect WoW’s performance.

Does anyone have beta and know if there are any issues there? I will test Beta once I update.

See my post above.

Thank you. This is helpful. I got few hours before I am ready to test it. I will post later or tomorrow my experiences.

It didn’t happen when I was in Oribos, but happened when I was out in the world (Revendreth) doing some quests. My frame rate fluctuates between 50-100 fps, but every time frame rate drops, things freeze for a sec to infinitely until I tab out and back again.

Normally it shouldn’t have much of an impact, but changes in macOS can trigger odd behavior in some programs, especially cross platform apps that aren’t necessarily written with best macOS dev practices in mind. For example, in the past with new macOS versions some apps started spewing hundreds of errors a minute due to API changes, creating massive error log files that clog up disk bandwidth and CPU time.

If you encounter odd behavior after an update it’s often worth it to pop open Activity Monitor to see if there’s any third party stuff that’s acting strangely.

I’m not playing beta right now. I’m having issues in retail. when ever i move my mouse is when the stuttering occurs. If I move the mouse quickly, like maneuvering my toon around a tight space during an encounter, the game locks up for short durations. As a tank this is extremely problematic.

I’m on a 2020 iMac and haven’t noticed any lag yet. The only change I’ve noticed is that the mouse pointer is a bit darker than it used to be; not sure why!
