In the german forums someone got an answer for his appeal.
The answer was something like: “Defending is not really in line with PvP, you have to do more”

The bans are not automated. What proof do we have that they are besides opinions and feelings? Absolutely zero. Meanwhile, if we even think about it for less than a minute, we can conclude that there would be a lot more evidence of bans being automated. We would solve the bot problem in a week. Why would they happen in waves anyway and not automatically? What would be the reason for the time between when enough reports are received and the actual penalty is dealt out? Why have Blizzard employees that have almost no stake in this openly lie about it? Lie for several years? With the same consistent story?
No, there’s no magical graph or number that shows you I’m right. It’s just everything else that proves I am.
Developers/QA, bunch of stuff but they’re specifically Classic team members. The larger WoW team also works on Classic related stuff when they need to.

Do you honestly think a GM could have clicked on your name, teleported to you, seen you AFK, and hit you with the hammer? Would take them all of 5 minutes per person

Basically this. I’ve seen countless times where Drek is at 1-3% and the horde wins, but 3 communal geared players are sitting afk on the hill outside his hall on mounts.
Sitting in a tower isn’t playing AV. You should be constantly watching the map and communicating. Not going “oh, I’ll sit here and defend and watch Youtube for 5 minutes”
