It happened so long ago now I think everyones forgotten how bad cata was, especially coming from wrath.

The only decent thing to come out of it was tmog.

Look at games like grand chase and world of kings (last one is a literal wow clone) and how they do events.

you can usually get one character endgame ready with each event.

Chromie time actually highlights how enjoyable WoD’s actual questing process was, it was the lack of content later that really hammered that expansion into the dislike pile - but bfa is trash from back to front unless you cherry pick bits.

I think its funny how WoW went on an incline from vanilla to TBC to wrath, which arguably just got better and better until cata. It was when they got rid of talent trees that the steep drop started to happen.
MoP was bad. But how bad? At the time, it was the worse expansion. No one liked pandas, no one asked for pandas, no one enjoyed the ever-living never mana running tanks and healers that you can just not kill, and they couldnt hit worth a wet noodle.
But WoD put in perspective that it could get worse. And it did. I didnt play WoD, just towards the end when legion was about to come out. Legion was alright. But then gear started to not matter anymore and we started to see level not matter either. It became a mess, and BFA was the aftermath of that mess. They tried to impose hyper balance which ruined the game entirely.

Shadowlands wont be any different. What they need to do is bring back talent trees and put all these ‘new’ neato abilities in the tree. Make stats matter again! Make gear matter again! Make glyphs, gems, enchants matter! Make professions matter. Get rid of companion pet battles and all these side games, and focus on the core game itself.

What made WoW great was to focus and pour energy into your character, YOUR identity. You would level professions, grind honor, grind for achievements. Select talents in your tree and focus to make the best build ever. It felt good. Now it doesnt feel good. Every character is the same. LITERALLY. I can go make another DH alt, and in the same day get him to the same level and there would be no distinguishing between the two since everything is now account bound. All the achievements, honor, etc. Especially since gear doesn’t matter, he would be just as strong in pvp. There is no character uniqueness anymore. Enough is enough

I absolutely remember a poll, around mid Cata (I think?), asking players what race they wanted to see explored more. Pandaren won by a fair bit. Then we got them and… everyone cried about it…?

The people who stomped their feet and parroted the Kung Fu Panda line paid 0 attention to the story. Dread Wastes especially was quite dark.

There are a lot of conflicting opinions in this thread, mainly towards WoD Vs BFA as the worst Expansion. So let’s compare them.

WoD

  • Garrison / Fail
  • Leveling Zones / Decent
  • Raid & Dungeons / Good
  • Tier Sets or Transmog / Some of the best in game
  • Tanann Jungle / Disaster
  • 6.2 Selfie Cam / Fail (Joke, kind of)
  • Story / Tad confusing, timeywimey stuff

BFA

  • Azerite / Fail
  • Azerite 2.0 or Essence’s / Okay
  • Warfronts / Fail
  • Island Expeditions / Fail
  • Leveling Zones / Mixed
  • Raid & Dungeons / Decent
  • Mechagon & Nazjatar / Mixed Fail
  • 8.3 and or Corruption / Fail
  • Story / Another faction war
  • Transmog / Okay

I tried to do this based on the overall opinion, not just my own.

WoD had no content, BFA had bad content. That’s a substantial difference IMHO.

It’s bad end game for casual noobs who’s gaming centered around World Quests.

There are casual non-noob players like me… limited play time but not noob who’s playtime centered around Mythic+, Heroic Raiding and even running 5-Mask Vision.

BFA caters Casuals allowing them to get enormous gold (thru Paragon Chests) just by spending around 15 min per day not hours per day. These gold supplies Casual to help them beat high end content thru armor repairs, access potions, access flasks, access high level enchants, etc.

Also on the same 15 min chore, you could get Revered/Exalted on rep after 3 weeks. Exalted rep items like Rank 3 Essences and Unlimited Augment Rune also help Casuals beat high end content.

I reached M+15 , AoTC and even beat 5-Mask Visions as a Casual on BFA. On WoD, I dont think I would be able to afford flasks, potions, expensive enchants becoz I had limited play time that I was not able to do much gold farming longer than 20 minutes per day.

Also, raiding back then usually needs guild. As casual, I cant commit to guild’s raiding schedule. I was not able to raid in WoD. Good thing, Legion introduced group finder for Raiding and BFA has it. I was able to raid again.

Like Legion, BFA has Mythic +… and it gives decent rewards… also good for Casuals with limited play time becoz time spent on Mythic + to get loot equal in quality with Raid is shorter on Mythic+ compared to Raiding.

I love all WoW expansions. Even though I didnt play much WoD, I still loved playing it. But BFA is way way more fun to me becoz it’s really way more Casual friendly.

Meh I still think the best time for casual players was TBC and wrath.

In TBC casuals could grind a full honor set that was decent in pvp (honestly I destroyed as a sl/sl lock with just the honor set). Wrath had JP/VP system. I know I had a lot more fun in those expansions. Just not a fan of WQs I guess

I only took 1 break in WoD. A couple months in I took a break till legion prepatch. WoD was terrible.

Eh, I think Shadowlands has potential to steal the crown from BFA, though I sincerely hope it doesn’t.

Whats more amusing is when people talk of a video game being good or bad as factual.

Its an individual experience. I think wod has great questing, one of the best (i also really enjoyed wrath questing as well) .

So to me wod isnt horrible. What revisionist history do i give a crap about? What you think people’s views on a video game will matter to history for anything substantial?

Shadowlands is looking to take the top spot already…

Sure are a ton of people leveling in WOD right now so there were a lot of folks that liked it. You see them talking in chat about it was better than they remembered it being. It was very good, but did remove key features and took away many things people did between raids which hurt it. Everything after MOP to me is bad except maybe Legion as it was good for the 1st half of its life, then when item scaling was introduced etc… things went downhill after.
