Change my mind. The butchering of WoW’s story, thinning out characters, focusing the narrative on certain, once popular ones. And in general trying to cobble together some massive epic build-up into something special. But ultimately just make people upset for butchering what began as something great.
We are very much getting the season 7 and 8 Game of Thrones Treatment here.
I’d say we’re more in a state of season 5-6 at the moment, quality has dropped off but it’s not over yet. Things are definitely going downhill, but the previous seasons we’re good enough that I’ll stick it out to see if they can conclude it in a decent way.
Please dear god Blizz pull your heads out of your rear ends and right the ship, you’re about to crash and burn. A bad expansion is understandable, two bad ones in a row is very bad, three in a row might just outright kill the game.
I came here to say this exact thing.
Shadowlands very much feels like the writing team just rocketing off to write an original story with primarily original characters that has nothing to do with WarCraft.
It has showcased a noticable drop in quality, and since it’s not really “WarCraft” anymore, I find it much harder to care about any of the established characters and themes, because it feels like I’m now playing a totally different game.
But, the damage is far from irreperable. Blizzard just needs to remember what World of WarCraft is about. The World of WarCraft
Shadowlands does almost nothing to feel like it’s part of WarCraft
The people that produced those last 2 seasons got mega-million deals - maybe WoW team thinks that ruining source material/lore is the path to better $paying$ work elsewhere?
Actually D&D lost their mega-deal due to the trainwreck that was the end of GoT.
Which is super ironic because alot of people on the inside attribute much of the drop in quality because D&D had kinda lost their passion for the show once they got the massive star wars deal.
Legion was Seasons 7 and 8. It was like some desperate race to blast through all the story resources left instead of giving major things the room to breathe.
We went from “The Legion’s invading, we need to shut down the portal!” to “Oh, also we’re going to truly kill Kil’jaeden this expansion in the second tier” - Kil’jaeden. The guy who had been running the Legion since Sargeras went MIA. He should have been an expansion-ending boss in his own right. Any player a year before Legion would have assumed that Kil’jaeden would one day be an expansion finale boss. Not a MIDDLE tier raid boss.
Then we went from that to, “let’s invade the LEGION’s base planet. Surprise, somehow some native Draenei have managed to Elude the demons for 10,000+ years at demon-central and can aid us? Also let’s restore the Titan Pantheon - who we will suddenly find out are still alive and ABOUT to fall to corruption that we magically arrive just in time to stop (except for Aggramar who we have to fight). Also, we’re going to take care of Sargeras with a last-minute reveal that beating the planet’s world soul translates into powering up a ship with the titan spirits on it who will suck Sargeras up, who we will also now learn is a big cloud.” That’s basically all thrown at us in a single content patch, half of it just inside the single raid.
BFA and Shadowlands are more like if AFTER Season 8 of GoT, HBO had told some guys to keep going and do a Season 9 and Season 10, and those guys had to figure out how to keep going after the prior showrunners had recklessly and speedily burned through every major plot thread in Legion.
