Beta Level Cap

So, I’m watching people play the beta, and clearing groups of ?? mobs because they have been stuck at 30 for so long that they have “BiS” for their level. Is there a plan to reset the characters?

My concern is that when they increase the level cap (to say 40), the “classic” experience will not be there. They will just be crushing everything in front of them. They are already beating up lvl 40 mobs. A lot of the gear drops for them will be less than optimal, diminishing the feeling of accomplishment.

Any thoughts?

Its just beta, who cares? Its not like we’re keeping these characters come launch. Also, im not sure they are raising the level cap for the beta

Well if they don’t plan to increase the level cap between now and release, then I guess there is no concern. And of course the characters are going to be trashed after. Blizz has NEVER allowed players to keep their Beta Characters for live game.

And who cares? Well, at least one person. I’m sure I am not the only one that wants this game to be as close to the original experience as possible. That will be difficult to test if the world is full of lvl 30 twinks going to 40.

Good testers will be making new accounts and leveling again.

They will be. It focuses the play in certain areas.

If they do anything like they did with the original beta, they will raise the cap a few different times as they finish working on those zones. Expect a cap of 40, 50, and then 60 with 60 being closer to the end of the beta test where they still have a week or two to fix after launch.

Now Blizz is only going to be testing certain aspects: all the quests populating, act correctly, have the right drop rates, NPCs act correctly, mobs aggro, drops, etc. Twinking really isn’t to much of a concern, specially since all characters will be deleted at the end. Blizz could also kill the servers and make everyone level again at any time. Doubtful, but possible.

Just remember that all this was tested before. The main concern is server stability and a few other odds and ends. They aren’t going to fix what was previously broken.

Or delete all characters and let them recreate pre-mades from level 30.

That is the kind of stuff you do in a beta. No problem here.

And there are a lot of things you can test “twinked out” at 30, with BiS. For example, melee hit % should still completely suck at that level without talents (as I can’t think of any gear that low with hit %), when attacking mobs 35+.

Also, it’ll be similar to someone hand-feeding their alts green/blue gear while leveling. They get to test being both undergeared and overgeared for quests.

The only testing that’s relevant is for bugs. It makes absolutely no difference how easy or hard any content is based on how geared you are. They’re not trying to tune anything. It will have the values that it had in classic.

Part of me wonders if they have a pre-made template system in place for the Beta. I mean, they should, but since it wasn’t part of the original code was it something they added when they did the slight upgrades?

The character creation system is the modern architecture with a Vanilla face. It’s there if they choose to use it.
