My wife, knowing how excited I have been about WoW Classic. Told me she had a huge surprise for me when I saw her next.
I cried when she showed me ultrasounds of our first child. She’s pregnant. I cried because I was hoping it was a Beta invite and was absolutely shattered to learn that was not the case. I’m not sure I’ll ever be happy again.
Trust me, inactive accounts have more chance to receive a beta invite if it will ever happen. The active accounts already customers for ActiBlizz, any inactive accounts who have been pulled to the game with Beta invite is a plus for them.
Did he purchase a BlizzCon Ticket, or the streaming ticket?
I think the BlizzCon stuff will sometimes ignore subscriptions. More likely than not, an inactive sub would delay your entry vs someone with an active one. But who knows outside of Blizzard?
There could also be a difference between getting the invite, and actually getting into the beta.
I was in the TBC and Wrath Beta, and terms and conditions, at the time I joined the beta clearly stipulated “You must have, or have had, an active World of Warcraft subscription on (insert date here) to participate.”
Which could also further trigger confusion, as I recall the date in question in one case was two or three months in the past. So if it required a Subscription that was active March 16th, and you cancelled your account on March 19th, only to get a Beta invite in May, you met the requirements for an active account as it was active on March 16th, you just didn’t have an active account anymore.
Yeah, it looks like nothing says you require a sub to be in it.
From the Beta Invite Opt In page:
We send out a limited number of invitations, based on several criteria. Customer service cannot assist with beta access, but if you’re interested you’ll want to sign up on your beta profile page.
If you are selected to participate in a beta test, you’ll receive an email with information on how to install the client and provide feedback.

The one page is generic boilerplate that is mostly targeted to non-subscription platforms.
The other is a generic message that isn’t the legalese that the actual Beta Signup would put you through.
It’s also entirely possible policies have changed in the intervening years. I remember seeing stipulations on much earlier betas that required a sub, as such I have an active sub. I know it may not be needed to get in, but I’m keeping it active in part because that possibility is still there.
The “terms” link has expired so I can’t guarantee that it isn’t there. However, it would make sense that these people would receive an invite to lure them back, then when they’re all hot and heavy for the beta, tell them “… and now you need to resub”.
Zero, I don’t want an beta invite as I would not play it.
One of the biggest reasons why I am waiting for Classic in the first place is that I get to keep my character forever and thus I don’t like participating in betas and whatnot because it’s just temporary stuff. Same applies to private servers.
I’ve played in several game betas, Blizzard’s and otherwise, and I don’t get attached to my characters. I do generally feel a little awkward in these cases as I’m never sure I’m a good enough player to give them much useful data. Still, I always run around looking for things that might be broken, and dutifully report them as I find them.
I’d do the same with Classic, but as for really wanting to get in to a hypothetical beta-- eh, no I’m not dying for one. If I didn’t I’d just watch the YouTubers I like who did (people like Bellular) and be satisfied.
I generally go into the Alphas and ticket like crazy. At one point I think I’d put in more than a thousand in one alpha. All the little annoying things that they need to clean up before they go live. I don’t worry about things like “This gear progression curve seems wrong etc”, and let all the TubeStars do that, but more from the technical “This text isn’t wrapping” or “This NPC is a foot off the ground.” stuff.
I generally do very little in the beta so that I can enjoy the live release without feeling like I’m already repeating the content.
The only thing I would do with a Beta invite is test and tweak Add-ons. I’m not going to push content, just so I can push the same content a few weeks later. Let those that have a more razor sharp eye and more time on their hands test and check the inconsistencies and inaccuracies.
