(BETA) Dragonflight Priest Talent Tree Feedback Thread

Like to point this out in PvP at this time once more. All valid points.

All your CC and mobility is easily negated by every melee class. It looks good on paper, but the truth is most of the melee have immunities, reflects, strong self heals, and endless gap closers. Most of the time you will be the one on the defensive. As for angelic feather, it does nothing when you are snared. Sure, you’ll break the initial snare from the melee with fade, but you’ll be re-snared again quickly.

And good luck getting stuck 1v1 with a competent rogue in arena who can just run off and heal quickly only to too quickly come back and beat you to a pulp.

I’ve been doing hundreds of arena skirmishes and came across maybe 1 or 2 other spriests the entire time. Most matches are melee and warlocks. And most fights end up with two melee steamrolling me. Granted, I’m only in 271 honor gear with some conquest, so that might be an issue because my damage is not strong enough even if I get the melee off me for a few seconds.

Adding my beta feedback post here just because I think it will be removed soon and I want to have a record of it incase that happens.

Finally have the ability to post here and before this thread is removed with the release of DF. I would like to add my opinions on DF Priest changes.

I have plenty of opinions on Priest and Shadow specifically, but I will try to just address the major outliers.

My Priest Feedback…

General Talent Tree

  • Leap of Faith: This ability does not benefit us yet is the “movement” ability that Evokers can reduce the cooldown of.
    • This is insultingly awful.
  • Shackle Undead: This ability is there same as its been since the beginning and has not had any updates done to it like many other crowd control abilities. Abilities like Warlocks Greater Banish in that it affects Undead as well as Demon, Elemental and Aberration. Shackle Undead should at least have a talent ability that enhances its capability just like Banish (Or baked in). It should at least have Aberration added to its uses. It makes sense when you consider what constitutes as an Aberration. In this same manner of changes, The fact that Warlocks can use Banish for up to 4 creature types as well as having a spammable fear just obscures the balance a bit much.

Aberration: The most well known are faceless ones , oozes , sludges , and void creatures .

  • Shadow Mend: As much as I hate Shadow Mend for Shadow since it locked us into 1 school of magic and made Shadow an easy target to spell lock chain, I think the removal of Shadow Mend was short sighted for Non-PvP content and for Holy and Disc. I think the best solution was to make Shadow Mend an optional Talent in the class tree but when taking it, it REPLEACES Flash Heal costing more mana but healing for more.
  • Door of Shadows: Why is this not in the class tree? Warriors got the Kyrian Summon Steward ability granting health and removes negative debuffs into their class tree. So its not unheard of to bring in Shadowlands Covenant Special abilities into the talent trees. With that said, Door of Shadows would both fit thematically for Priests and mechanically in that Priests have no “displacement” ability. I am dumbfounded why this wasn’t a shoe in for the class Tree BECAUSE of the pushback from Vault of the Heavens turning Leap of Faith into a self displacement.
  • Spectral Guise: Bring this back. This was a fun ability to use in both PvE to skip past mobs that a Mind Soothe will not either work because of the Mob Type OR the path is too narrow anyway. If the cooldown of 30 sec is an issue, bring it up to 2 min. Also it can compete with Door of Shadows as a “Choice” talent so you get extra mobility OR a target drop. The “reason” given for not including it was very lackluster and quite simply unacceptable given the actual state of the game in how it works and with how other classes have “similar” abilities or don’t seem to have PvP restrictions as the Priest does. It has felt for a long while now that the Priest class is held to a different standard of rules compared to the rest of the classes and this really highlights that fact.
  • Silence: Why is this not in the class tree that shifts between this for Shadow or something else for Holy and Disc that is only an interrupt? Once again, Warriors have there Weapon Specialization Talent in the class tree that changes between all 3 specs to cater a different talent for each specialization. The tech exists, it should be present where it makes sense and this is a good opportunity for just that.
  • Shining Force: Holy/Disc Interrupt ability in place of Silence: An idea/example is to rework Shining force to be the Holy/Disc equivalent to Silence. It can be made to affect a single target as just an interrupt or it can retain its knockback or something else.
  • Angelic Bulwark: Is simply lackluster. Improve it. An idea is to add Damage Reduction on self while your Power Word: Shield holds.
  • Petrified: Psychic Scream fears in place (Choice with Psychic Voice). In Cataclysm, a glyph was added to the game that allowed Psychic Scream to cause targets affected to “Fear in place”. I would like an option to do this again, I would call that talent “Petrified”. The warrior once again has this capability in the Talent “Menace”. So once again we see inconsistent rules between designs for what seems to be all classes vs Priest.
  • Angelic Feather / Body and Soul: This should be a “Choice” talent. The fact that these are 2 separate talents that do similar things (a common occurrence within the Priest class as a whole) is very questionable at best and downright ridiculous at worse. Something needs to make these 2 movement abilities more unique. Angelic Feather can allow for flying capability while Body and Soul can suppress movement reduction effects for its duration as an example.
  • Vampiric Embrace: Since this is near useless for Holy/Disc. I think a good idea would be to either Move back into Shadows tree (Silence would take its place in the Class Tree (Preferred)) OR change this into a “Choice” Talent with a reworked version of Mind Games. Also San’layn can either be baked in or if Vampiric Embrace is moved back into Shadow Tree, it would be cool to give a “passive” healing effect like the original Vampiric Embrace as a “Choice” between San’layn and repurpose Sanguine Teachings where your Vampiric Touch and Devouring Plague grants an additional healing for yourself and your party and/or raid.
  • Mind Games: Reworked AOE version without the damage effect. Can be changed to affect multiple enemies in a targeted area and deals ZERO damage but really doubles down on the reversal of health/damage effects. This can make it a great utility for M+ as a group defensive cooldown as well as acting as a way to prevent healing done. This would work great in PvP and also in Raiding.
  • Cascade: I would like this returned. If the healing aspect is too overpowered, then surely the DPS aspect is fine? What if Cascade only returned for Shadow and it replaces Divine Star option ONLY for Shadow?

Shadow Talent Tree

  • Mind Spike: When the change was done to Mind Spike to NOT rip off your Damage over Time effects on the target, I admit that you completely lost me. The current implementation of Mind Spike seems unfinished or no clear direction is given. I suggest the following…
    • Return Mind Spikes DOT ripping effect OR reduce the damage Mind Spike does on targets with DOTS on them. Do this as a way to clearly distinguish and separate the function of Mind Flay vs Mind Spike. In Cataclysm MoP and WoD both Mind Flay AND Mind Spike existed. Mind Flay was the filler and Mind Spike was the “Burst” button. It dealt a lot of upfront damage at the cost of being outpaced by dots the longer you kept using it. So its purpose was to get the job done FAST.
    • To achieve the “burst” window that Mind Spike role SHOULD be… some ideas are as follows…
      • Irrationality: (New Talent) Choice talent with Surge of Darkness. Brings back the Dot Ripping effect but increases the damage of Mind Spike by a lot to compensate and casting Mind Blast reduces the cast time of Mind Spike by 20% for 3 sec. This allows the choice to have random proc of Instant Mind Spike OR a heavy hitting high Risk High reward casting Mind Spike that rips dots but deals a massive amount more damage.
      • Mastermind: Bring this back as a choice with Surge of Darkness or add it somewhere else in the tree (a capstone talent). Maybe make its effects only work on targets without dots on them. Also, could make Mind Spike puts a debuff on target so each application of Mind Spike on target increases the Mastermind effect.
  • Dark Ascension: Make Mind Flay work with DA just like it did with Dark Archangel in Cataclysm. The is another reason why things didn’t make sense with Mind Spike ripping dots as it added an awkwardness to DA in that only Mind Blast and Shadow Word: Death would gain the enhanced damage from DA if you were dealing with single target and didn’t want to rip dots off with Mind Spike.
    • Remove the cast time and make it instant (See below)
  • Void Eruption (Voidform): Void Eruption is a cool spell. Void Bolt imo is not. I think if you changed the activation of Voidform to just be “Voidform” itself instead of “Void Eruption” then you can remove the cast time of both DA and Voidform since activation Voidform deals ZERO damage and then the Voidform Button becomes Void Eruption allowing you multiple uses of Void Eruption while your within Voidform.
    • The problem with Voidform is that it first (In Legion) was to be used often in and out and out state causing you to flip back and forth and allowing more chances to use Void Eruption. But with S2M, it caused you to want to stay in that state as long as possible. Since then, it seems Voidform is meant to stay in as long as possible and the current DF talents indicate just as much. This causes the use of Void Eruption to be reduced and takes a back seat. So it makes more sense to make that as the ability to use AFTER you enter Voidform instead of the ability to ENTER voidform. This will also solve some AOE issues.
  • Dark Void vs Shadow Crash: Shadow Crash is good when paired with Misery. Dark Void is bad because you have to choose between Misery and itself which throws out all the QOL effects that Misery brings to the spec. Instead, Make Dark Void a “Choice” with Shadow crash. Make Dark Void COST insanity with NO cooldown and will apply Vampiric Touch instead of Shadow Word: Pain. Make Dark Void just apply DOTS and have a cast time and Shadow Crash Instant cast but deals damage with a cooldown.
    • Dark Void: 2 sec cast, Cost 30 Insanity, no cooldown, applies Vampiric Touch.
    • Shadow Crash: Instant Cast & Deals upfront damage, generates insanity, 30 sec cooldown, applies Vampiric Touch.
      • This makes it so you have choices to always spread dots if you have insanity to spend or generate insanity spreading dots instantly but limited by a cooldown.
      • I Think this offers 2 similar but different gameplay choice routes when it comes to spreading dots.
  • Shadowfiend vs Mindbender: Its silly that if I want to use my pet ability to AOE or with Idol of Y’Shaarj that I am forced to use Mindbender. It basically makes Shadowfiend have no unique identify and once again highlights the consistent findings of multiple abilities that do the same thing. Instead I suggest a new approach to make Shadowfiend more unique.
    • Shadow Vulnerability (Choice with Mindbender): Your Shadowfiend applies Shadow Vulnerability each time it attacks. Shadow Vulnerability increases yours and your shadowfiends shadow damage by 3% stacking up to 5 and lasting for 15 sec.
      • This makes Shadowfiends identity as a longer cooldown than Mindbender but more Burst orientated and will then extend these effect to multiple targets with Inescapable Torment and synergize well Idol of Y’Shaarj as a good burst and crowd control effect while keeping its own unique identity as Burst vs Sustain with Mindbender.
  • Idol of the Old’Gods: I think with the introduction of the Idol talents, it caused a lot of ramming square peg in round circle result. Shadows Idol capstone talents are dull and and just passive sometimes something procs maybe or not whatever move on etc. If these should stay, I think it would be much better to just lump them all into a shared talent “Idol of the Gods” and they can all proc and do what they do within that capstone. Then you can add things like Mastermind and other interesting ideas like perhaps Living Shadow back that actually copies your spells for interesting interactions instead of just doing damage procs like if you use Mind Blast, it will also cast Mind Blast and it will gain you insanity and cause effects like the Apathy reduced movement effect etc.

Capstone paths ideas…

  • Mastermind = Mind Blast & Mind Spike orientated. Maybe bring back Clarity of Power as the end capstone that Mastermind leads into and this version of CoP will enhance the damage done by Mind Blast, Mind Spike and Shadow Word: Death to the target without your dots on it.
  • Living Shadow = Shadow Word: Death & Shadow Word: Pain orientated. SW:P has a 5% chance to proc LS and SW:D can have a 50% chance to proc when used on target >20% HP and 100% chance to proc on target <=20% HP.
  • Idol of the Gods = All the current abilities that proc these will remain the same / adjust proc rate.
  • Spectral Power = Shadowy Apparitions have a chance to proc Dark Ascension or Voidform OR extend the duration by 0.5 sec each time they deal damage.
    • (Similar to Demon Hunters “Shattered Destiny” talent extending Demon Form)

Those are my primary concerns/feedback. Hopefully we can see some positive adjustments to Priest and Shadow in the upcoming content patch’s post release.

Nearly 5 months and almost 3000 posts later: we’re finally here: the expansion launch. Everyone here poured in hours and hours of power word faith into getting our favorite classed tweaked. We had a lot of ups and downs and this isn’t the end of the journey. Just the end of the “beta feedback” thread as we move into the “live feedback” thread.
