Years ago, when I was still bright-eyed and bushy tailed, I used a USB transfer cable, but now, at 73 I need to know if that is still the best way to do it? If so, can someone please recommend a decent-priced cable for me?
I haven’t had enough training on the “Vulcan Mind-Meld” to use it, with being afraid of messing something up. Last time I tried, I caused a bidet to appear in my toilet, so please, help an elderly gamer out?
Thanks and I’m looking forward to interacting with y’all with my new rig!
there’s probably just as many ways to transfer data from one PC to another as there is to leave your lover. The USB transfer cable still works but most likely the fastest way is to simply use cloning software with both the new and old HDD / SSD in the same PC but that’s if you want to clone a drive or move large amounts of data quickly.
I personally use either docking stations or my USB portable drive to back up or move information.
So the question is what are you moving? How large are all the files combined?
Local Disc (C) shows 111 GB Available
65.4 GB Used and 45.7 GB free.
There’s a whole bunch of stuff on my SPECCY app under STORAGE as well.
so do you want to clone this drive or just move over some pictures, spreadsheets, and documents?
Lilybugg, I have very little since I lost all my music files. Pictures, important e-mails. I plan to re-do my cd collection onto my new rig. Also, I guess I will have to re-install WoW. That’s it.
I’m sorry, but I don’t know what’s involved in cloning, so I guess the move over part is what I want. As I stated previously, I used the cable before, and I believe I had to download some software onto both machines.
As I tell everyone else, just consider me as knowing “Nnnnnnothink! I know nothink!”

ok, like i said previously there are a whole host of ways in doing this
cloning comes into handy when you literally just want to clone one drive to another but that does not sound like something you want to do.
cheapest way is to store everything in the cloud or connect the two PCs via LAN and move files from there but I’m thinking im going over your head with that
It seems like the cable is the easiest way for you, if you want to move over some files using a cable like the Belkin F5U279 you can.
if it was me, I would get something like WD elements portable hard drive and place all the files you want onto that so you always have a backup of important info. From there you can transfer over all those files to your new PC. It will cost twice what the cable costs but has a more practical use. In fact I have a portable HDD with all my wife’s pics of our kids, tax info, and other important files that I keep in a fireproof safe and a second backup of everything on an old HDD I use through a docking station.
I would recommend the portable hard drive, they start at $50 for a 1TB but it’s your money so your decision.
as for WoW, do a fresh install of battlenet and WoW unless you have a painfully slow ISP
as for email, are you downloading them to your PC with an app like thunderbird otherwise they are all store online if you use a service like gmail.

I have a WD external hd, but I thought all you had to do with it is plug in its usb and it would just copy all your stuff. Apparently that was wrong. Can I erase whatever’s on those partitions and start over? I thought I had my music on the G partition, but I don’t. So there’s that… (time passes) My new rig just got here and I have unpacked it. The first thing I’m going to do is read and make myself familiar with everything. Looking through the glass partitions I see I need to do some unpacking there as well.
Before I go any further, let me just say thanks for your help. I really appreciate your taking time out of your day o help me out.

it will come up as a new drive in your PC, you can simply create new folders in the drive and drag over all the files into the new folders
yes, if there is nothing you want to keep on it you can simply reformat if you want to or delete the files and folders if there are just a few files and you want to keep the various partitions.
Update -----
There were some cables included which I could not identify, but that was easily solved. Just called ABS customer service, gave them my NewEgg order number and they told me those cables were for a later upgrade of my video card, so I stashed them away with thousands of other cables, cords and plugs.
Today, (Tuesday) my wife and I will change out the the CPU’s. The “Quick Start” page they provided me with told me which inputs to use, so we’ll be ready to go.
Now, a question: Since today is patch day, should I wait to do my fresh install of WoW after that or does it matter?
Also, the data transfer cable I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BZF1LL6?ref=ppx_pt2_dt_b_prod_image
will be here tomorrow (Wednesday). I can use that cable at that time, right, since I don’t need to download any software? Just hook the 2 CPU’s together and follow the instructions?
About the external HD: I do want to reformat that thing, but am paranoid about doing it now (on the old CPU). Can I do that anytime?
Sorry about all the questions. Wish I were younger and had retained all the tuff I once knew - but THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the help!
doesn’t matter, once the client is installed it will patch itself before launching
according to the listing, the cable is plug and play so no additional software is necessary
you can do so anytime
Problem hooking up ethernet cable to back of the ABS CPU.
We use the ethernet which plugs into the back of the modem on one end and into the back of the CPU on the other. We use it to keep check on my wife’s pacemaker.
The problem with the new computer is that the plug end of the ethernet cable will not fit the receptacle provided for it, so I guess I need an adapter of some kind, Lilybugg. My immediate problem, however is I don’t know how to ask for what I need. Can you help, please? I took a look at Amazon and found some adapters, but I don’t know which are the correct ones.
Here is one page which shows the yellow cable, as it looks now.
Just need a recommendation. Thank you!
the link you have is just everyday ethernet cat5, 5e & 6 cables. all the cables have identical connectors on each end that will fit into any PC’s ethernet port. I’m not sure which ABS PC you pruchased but it should have an ethernet port. So i’m not sure what adapter you are talking about since you already have the ethernet cable you probably don’t need one

These are the specs for the computer, and ja, it is a Cat5e RJ45 cable. It just won’t fit into its port. I’ll give one of the USB adapters a try. I asked the same question at Tom’s Hardware and at ABS customer service, and everyone is of the same opinion: “It’s supposed to fit right there, Bill”
I’m beginning to look for Rod Serling of “The Twilight Zone”.

looking on from the back, the ethernet port is to the right of the USB 3.2 ports (in red)
is there a cover on the ethernet port?
are you sure this isn’t a telephone line?

Remember the thousands of cables I said I had stored away? We found another ethernet cable and tried it (one has to force it) and it worked. It made connection, but you really have to push, same with pulling it out again.
So after I take my wife to her birthday dinner, we will finish the installation of the new rig,
Thank you, Lilybugg, for ALL your help!

Nice PC. If it was me and the old PC wasn’t going to be used I would’ve took out the hard drive and put it in the new PC and used it as a storage drive.
Would’ve had to go into the BIOS to set the PC to start off the new OS drive so it wouldn’t try to boot off the old one.
Or could’ve cloned it after it was in the new PC as well and it would’ve been done alot faster.
