All the old guides on how to do this seem to be outdated, ie I think old mission tables won’t reward them anymore (let alone mentions of the old app), etc.
So how do people farm them these days for things like boosting pets to max level?

Hit all of the charm daily quests on at least 1 toon, usually 3-4 toons. I also take advantage of Super Squirt for leveling to make charms go farther.
Mission tables. Legion, BFA, SL. Plus the pet battle dailies. I pull about 170 a week.
You have a few options.
Those still work? Seriously? I remember making bank way back when but then I slacked off during SL and now I’m thousands off what I need to finish collecting.
I honestly was expecting them to be a non-source, especially since the old charms were converted.
I dont pet battle. Only do mission tables. I am sitting on 7500 pet charms.
Oh heck yeah I still make about 700 gold a week and at least 70 to 80 pet charms off of each table. Plus, as it turns out with the higher level missions, there are gear drops that you don’t get in the open world that add to your transmog.
As others have mentioned already.
You have a few options.
Shadowlands, Battle for Azeroth, Dragonflight, War Within. All have World Quests available daily that you can learn to do rotations, per character, per day. That reward Charms.
Many people still farm 1000’s of charms with their alts weekly.
If you have a box (multiple accounts) it goes up substantially faster.
Shadowlands, Battle for Azeroth have mission tables that can be setup quickly per new character. They require progress to a certain point in the mission table campaign before you are guaranteed charns every day.
The trick to getting alts setup quickly goes as follows.
When you activate the command table for the first time you should have zero Champions unlocked. Your mission table npc units level are equal to the average level of your champion units.
If you go to Oribos, use the renown unlock item for 500g from the flight path vendor. You should get 2 of the follower experience tokens. There is a 3rd for a certain renown ilevel at 70 something.(Im not home to check).
If you have a single champion unlocked and use the tokens. (Up to 3). Your average Champion level goes way up immediately, as opposed to you having to level 25 champion followers before the npc units average levels go up.
By doing this to one champion first, it allows you to do the hardest missions with much ease. More importantly, very little time.
Just do the pet battle world quests - often they reward stones to boost pets without having to use this currency.
There are usually a few pet battle WQs close to the capital in TWW. A descent sized warband all hitting them would net a lot of charms per day plus be slowly gaining exp.
(I was contemplating this as a levelling strategy at one point)
