Best way to improve as Prot

So after being told I’m the worst paladin tank in existence by a healer in a Mythic 0 yesterday, I think I should consult additional resources for improvements. I read through the guide on Icy-Veins , as well as watching through some Youtube videos for getting the gist of paladin Tanking. Are there any other resources that I can use/ community that I can join?

We finished the run with only one wipe. I admit that I don’t know which mob is skippable, so I pulled everything that is not an obvious skippable mob. I asked the healer to let me know why I was doing bad so I can improve that he told I’m stupid and put me on ignore…

That said, any help is welcomed!

If the healer didn’t provide specific feedback I’d ignore it. Quite a few people will lambast anyone short of the best tank they have ever seen. Keep running 0s, and learning routes.

I’m sure there are communities you can join, but I’m not a part of any. Welcome to tanking =)

You seem fine, don’t let mean comments get to you, I think they ought to change inner light though I feel like it’s just bad with no redeemable qualities.

That’s weak man. I agree that if they didn’t give specifics then they were just being rude.

On the flip side. One of Pal tank main strengths is interrupts. When you pull a pack, count how many you pull. Target that first caster and get the first interrupt, tab target to the next caster and either use your stun or your shield to get that interrupt. Knowing the number of mobs in the pack takes the work out of tab targeting. You won’t get all of them
And that’s ok. But you can get a lot of them and really control fights. It’s fun.

In the beginning try marking a skull on one caster and focusing another on your own. Hopefully dps is paying attention and gets their int’s. Because you’ve got plenty to lock down 1-2 mobs on your own.

Have blessings of sacrifice on an easily accessed key. Use it on a party member when their health is low. It will save them 99% of the time.

Same with Blessing of Protection. There are a few times when you can use it on yourself like when Rezan eats eats you or to drop necrotic stacks. But make sure to cancel it immediately on necrotic because you will lose threat.

On kiting weeks, the consecration talent is vital. Otherwise I use judgment of light and hit each mob with a judgment as I tab target. That makes their attack’s heal you. It’s cool.

There’s plenty more but that’s a good place to start because building that muscle memory will make you much better than most tanks.

Get a name plate Addon. I use KUI it’s great. It doubles as my threat monitor. Deadly boss mods
Also curser trail is cool. For the times when you might need to mouse finding your curser can mean life or death!

That was a troll, not a helpful person.

That being said, for M+ guides., you can go here: https://www.wowhead.com/dungeon-guides. Wowhead also has a class guide that I’m a bit too lazy to look up.

You are at the right gear level for the content. The problem is the community has set the bar VERY VERY high for Mythic 0 so you are expected to have like 380 ilvl gear for Mythic 0.

Work on your Heart of Azeroth… do the daily emmisary quest. Also run the warfront weeklies for the really nice gear…farm Lions Roar and Ivus in Darkshore and Stormgarde. Do any Invasions you see up for 370 ilvl gear…

I just geared a Human Paladin also and got him to 382 ilvl so yes I have dealt with the community as you have.

Also look into getting the 500 conquest for the pvp gear that works incredibly well in pve and is 385 ilvl plus the random weekly reward from the chest.

Biggest advice I have for you is there is nothing wrong in how you are approaching the game it is just more of a community thing and where they have set the bar. Thinks like expecting 390 ilvl for Mythic 3 or some other craziness.

Only Thing i can say is Run as Much M0 as you can and figure out which mobs to pull, which path to avoid and what are other benefits your other member can Brings, like Rogue can Shroud, Warlock can SS you so you can Death Run. Whether its a M+ or Raids experience is Keys which you only learns when you do play a lot, Don’t give a dammn about what other is saying , You just need to focus on what you have learned on each Run. I also went through the same learning curve, so what i did is Instead of starting as a Tank i used to Que as Healer, ( As Paladin u have this Option) and Keep an Eye on what my Tank is doing. Once i have the confidence i started Tanking and never Looked Back . As a Paladin Tank you will pull some Additional Mobs Sometime due to Avenger’s Shield Hitting 3 Targets, Be Aware of That. Use Shield of The Righteous as Defensive abilities ( At least Keep One Stack On hand to use when Big Damages comes, It can Block any Damages), Know When to Use Light of The Protector ( It heals 200% During Wings, So powerful it acts like Mini Lay on Hands). Learn how effectively use Avenger’s Shield to interrupt, sometime u have to delay using it to interrupt casting. Some of Paladin’s CDs is very Useful, Like Freedom, BOP, Lay on Hands, Sacrifice, I always Keep my BOP and LOH intact to use on Dying players, Preferably Healers. Just Experiment with ur Pally and Build Up ur Experience.

what i struggle with as prot the most is just holding threat on geared dps.

most guides say to save 1 charge of shield of the righteous for emergencies but if you are running with classes like demon hunters that constantly pull threat off you you might want to use all 3 charges for aoe threat when you pull a new pack.

the talent that turns your weapon attack into a spinning hammer AOE is better for AOE threat too.

tabbing judgement on all targets is a great way to hold threat as well.

some things to be aware of with damage abilities and how they scale as far as i’m aware.

avenger’s shield damage will scale off of your shield item level.
pretty sure the cone from shield of the righteous scales off of strength
and weapon attacks scale off weapons damage.
so all those things will help with threat generation especially on skittish weeks.

also i’m bad about it but the talent that taunts AOE everying in a radius when you bubble is great for controlling emergency threat especially if you find yourself eventually pushing 10 keys with super geared DPS on reaping packs.

i say this because my biggest struggle as a prot tank is holding threat on high burst classes. I ran a key with double demon hunter and it was very frustrating holding threat off both of them but all the little things with threat add up.

if you get discord on mobile or desktop check out this chat (discord is free and very popular for chat and text) its the paladin discord channel and there are many experienced players that can help you out with any questions you have.

on desktop click the plus sign and select join server and you only have to type in the f2TZhk to join the server.

I would highly recommend picking up the Method Dungeon Tools addon. It allows you to pre-plan your routes in each dungeon week-by-week. You should also read “The Weekly Route” thread on RaiderIO which is authored by Dratnos, a very high-level Mythic+ player:
https://raider.io/news/28-the-weekly-route-teeming-fortified-quaking-and-reaping

The articles will provide you with normal and expert routes each week and you can use the addon to plan what you’ll be pulling ahead of time and share it with the rest of the group. I know it sounds tedious and daunting, but learning all of the pulls in each dungeon and knowing exactly what you’ll be doing ahead of time is invaluable. Preparation is key – the smoothest runs are always the ones where everyone knows exactly what they’ll be doing. You don’t want to “wing it” once the timer starts.

Aside from that, just keep doing as many dungeons as you can and your experience, comfort, and confidence will increase over time. Also consider using voice chat for easier and faster communication with party members.

Just remember you learn by making mistakes, so I wouldn’t really worry about the mean comments. Just learn what you can for next time. You only really get good by doing it over and over, making mistakes, and learning from them.

If you don’t mind healing, I’d consider going through as a healer a few times while paying attention to the route and which mobs are being avoided. Also make sure to study boss gimmicks beforehand so you’re not completely confused during them.

Everything based on your armory looks good. Without knowing where you struggled all we can do is make assumptions and give advice based on those assumptions.

If someone tells you that you are bad, try to be polite and ask them why they believe it is. Don’t try to rebuttal their comments if they do tell you how you did poorly, just accept it and ponder on it.

In the meantime, make sure and join the Hammer of Wrath discord.

The top Paladin theory crafters and performers are there to give advice.

You can also look into joining the Mythic plus discord “Mythic Plus Friends” as they do learning runs to help people new to them learn the ropes.

https://discord.gg/mythicplusfriends

Hard to really say without being there. Your talents look fine except lvl 75 row. I would take either other talent there.

You don’t need two vanguard traits, try to get soaring shield from somewhere.

Always keep consecrate up and stand in it. Don’t spam SotR nonstop, taper your use a bit to make sure when bigger hits are coming you have a charge to use.

Don’t overcap on SotR either. If you are about to start a pack and have 3 SotR and 2 judgment for example, use SotR then judgment. Don’t waste the recharge rate you get from using judgment. Try to keep your instant heal on CD often too unless you’re expecting to take a big hit. There is nothing wrong with not pressing buttons for a second or two so you can instantly heal after a big chunk.

Don’t be afraid to use CDs and use them to cover gaps in SotR use. Ex, you’re out of charges and no judgment charges to quickly regain one then use guardian or something so you have mitigation while you rebuild charges.

Hope some of that helps.

Get as much haste as you can to keep up SoTR as much as possible.

Interrupt everything.

Rotate your CD’s.

Watch videos, study dungeon mechanics. As a tank you are looked upon to lead the run. Regardless of how good you play, if you don’t understand the dungeon’s mechanics it’s going to be painfully obvious to players that do.

This last paragraph is important.

As a tank, you have to know the dungeon better than anyone else or you’re in for a bad time. If you don’t know how certain mobs or a boss works you will wipe the group more than likely. It’s daunting and nothing but practice will make it easier.
