Instead of Malygos going all genocidal in WoTLK toward mortal magic users, he should have used Sintharia’s approach. Apparently 500 years before the dark portal, Sintharia cursed the Kirin Tor and the wizard were unable to use their magic. This coming from a black dragon who isnt particularly a master of arcane magic. Malygos, as lord of magic should have been able to pull off a more effective version of this.
The insane Prime Consort of the Dragonflight dedicated to eradicating all life does not make for an excellent role model, even if Malygos was villainous (in the realms of WoW’s narrative, don’t @ me with “Malygos was right!”) as well.
I’m just saying it would be less likely that everyone would be trying to kill Malygos if he was just trying to take away the mages power, instead of killing them all. From a hierarchical perspective, Malygos was appointed by the Titans to protect the worlds magic, if anyone can take away peoples right to use arcane magic, he is the one.
Mortals dont have a good track record of using magic responsibly.
Because dragons used it so much more responsibly? See: the entire nexus war.
Malygos believed the world would be irreparably damaged or even destroy if mortals were allowed to keep using magic. Even the Nexus war is, small compared to the war of the ancients and the sundering caused by mortals (the Elves at the time were immortal I think, but would still be classified as mortals by the Dragons)
He redirected the ley lines, the dragons don’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to responsible use of magic.
I dont see what the problem is with that, so he redirected them to the nexus, its probably as simple to redirect them to how they originally were. The Titans gave Malygos the Arcanomicon, which is a map of the worlds ley lines. Along with his role as protector of the worlds magic, moving the ley lines around probably directly falls under his job description.
You can honestly say with a straight face redirecting all the magic on Azeroth to a singular location is safe instead of a catastrophic incident waiting to happen?
Agreed considering the Rift inside the Nexus was created by Malygos redirecting the Leylines. It’s widening cannot be stopped and has only been slowed down.
Malygos has already caused a magical rift to the Arcane Realm that is less closable than the one to the Fel Realm/Twisting Nether that the Legion created in the Temple of Elune/Tomb of Sargeras!
I completely forgot about that. Check and mate draconic moral high ground.
The Highborne may have created an Eye of Aman’Thul-sized Rift to the Fel Realm that needs seals to keep shut plus a second one that now serves as a portal to Deepholm(which was made bigger on the Deepholm end when Deathwing burst through) but they never created a massive rift to the Arcane Realm that can’t be closed period!
The Blue Dragonflight caused more damage to reality surrounding Azeroth with their actions than the Highborne and the Legion(which only created 2 small holes that are eclipsed by the Rift created by the Blue Dragons)!
I dont see how anything of those things are equivalent to nearly blowing up the world, and shattering its continent, as the mortal elves did.
So…
This means an arcane user (Mage if you will) can be stripped off his/her magic? Didn’t the Highborne did that during the War of the Ancients when they sealed the well of eternity from outside users in which rendered the Moon Guard Sorcerers unable to use magic?
I mean nearly destroying the world vs creating an unfixable tear in reality that continues to expand even today? I feel like one of those is worse than the other and it’s not the first one.
They’re both felony offenses worth 3-4 life sentences. Which receives the worse penalty is really a matter of the judge’s discretion.
We dont know if the tear in reality can be fixed or not, all we know is Warmage Kaitlyn apparently cant fix it. But she’s only a middle ranking kirin tor mage. Considering its been nearly a decade since the events of WoTLK, and the scary hole in reality hasn’t done anything, I think its safe to assume its harmless…maybe.
I always assumed that it couldn’t be fixed while Malygos was redirecting the leylines through the Nexus. Once that stopped I figured that the blue dragonflight could do something about it. But that’s just my guess.
They didn’t get rid of it by Cataclysm(when the Twilight Dragonflight began popping up in the Nexus) nor did they get rid of it by Legion(when the Ethereum began looting the place) so the Rift is indeed unfixable!
Malygos hadn’t been playing with a full deck since Deathwing obliterated most of his flight.
Honestly one of Malygos’ biggest errors was his choice of targets. It made absolutely no sense that his whole plan prioritized eliminating the only mage organization that’s specifically shown to have and enforce rules and restrictions against misusing magic. Had he approached them as allies with his concerns, the Kirin Tor would have in all likelihood helped Malygos in his efforts to squash reckless magic abuse on Azeroth.
Instead he ignored blatantly and maliciously irresponsible magic users like the Scourge and prioritized the destruction of the only cabal of mortal mages that’s historically even bothered trying to police the use of magic.
That wasn’t exactly comparable; they could still use magic, but the most powerful ancient kaldorei mages were so accustomed to having the Well’s power available to them that they were inexperienced at only tapping into the ambient magic all around them, so when the Highborne shielded it against outside use, the Moonguard were left severely depleted and weakened.
Rhonin on the other hand, was trained in magic on modern Azeroth without the Well of Eternity to rely on. He’d been teaching Illidan as well, so they were both far less affected by losing access to the Well’s power.
