Context:
WoW is the most demanding video game I play on PC (lol), and my standards are basically “Get the low-medium end of new parts as I need them”. I’m getting sick of being limited to 1920 x 1080 resolution on my 24" monitor and want more.
Here’s what I"m working with:
CPU i7-4790K
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
24 GB RAM
monitor: View Sonic XG2402
If there’s anyway I could upgrade my monitor a bit without changing my GPU that would be great. Realistically, I shouldn’t spend more than $500 right now, but if there’s an upgrade path where I could do a monitor now and plan for a GPU later, I’m all ears.
EDIT: had my current monitor resolution wrong
Unless you’re planning an absolutely ridiculous resolution and refresh rate combo, all you need to replace is the screen.
GTX 960s should have HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 ports in some configuration. Both will allow for 2160p (aka UHD or the misnomer “4K”, which is actually slightly wider) at 60Hz without using any colour compression. You could go to a higher resolution if you sacrifice some refresh rate, or you could go to a higher refresh rate if you sacrifice some resolution. A 1440p (aka QHD or the misnomer “2K”, which would actually be closer to 1080p) screen could be run at up to 144Hz, for example.

ViewSonic lists the XG2402 as 1920 x 1080, are you asking about a monitor larger than 24" or a monitor with a resolution higher than 1080p? Or both? A larger monitor is no problem from a graphics perspective, visually most people prefer a higher resolution once you hit 27". A monitor with a higher resolution is going to really make you drop settings even further but with a budget of $500, you can easily pick up a AMD RX6600 and a decent 27" 1440p monitor. You could keep playing at similar settings. Any GPU past the RX 6600 would be held back by your CPU.
Thanks, and yes it’s 1920 x 1080; that was my mistake. I’ll look into your recommendations!
ultrawide!!

i think there are some 34 inch ultrawide under 500
